Quarterfinals Recap: USA, Australia, and France Move on to Semifinals
USA (4-0):
Breanna Stewart had a big first half to help USA to a 19-point lead over Nigeria at halftime of the team’s Quarterfinals win. Stewart scored 13 points on 71% (5/7) shooting from the field and 67% (2-3) shooting from deep in the first half. Breanna finished with six rebounds, three assists, one block and a steal in USA’s victory.
Sabrina Ionescu came off the bench to score two points on 100% (2/2) shooting from the free-throw line to go along with one rebound, one assist, and a steal in six minutes,
USA will face Australia in the Semifinals on Friday, August 8 at 11:30 AM ET.
Australia (3-1):
Australia advanced to the Semifinals with an 85-67 victory over Serbia. Sandy Brondello’s squad shot 53% (18-34) from three-point territory while out-rebounding Serbia by 12. Australia’s 85 points marked the highest-scoring outing by a Serbia opponent in Paris, and also was the highest point total scored by Australia so far this tournament.
France (3-1):
Marine Johannès came off the bench to score a game-high 24 points in France’s 84-71 win over Germany in the Quarterfinals. Johannès became the fourth player since 2008 to record multiple games of at least five made three-pointers within the same tournament, joining Yuki Miyazawa, Mike Fujitaka, and Diana Taurasi, and the first to do so while coming off the bench. Johannès made 57% (8-14) of her shots from the field and shot 50% (5-10) from beyond the arc.
Marine Fauthoux helped France build a lead in the second quarter with five points and a steal in the frame. Fauthoux added two rebounds and shot 100% (1-1) from three-point range in the win.
France will take on Belgium (2-2) in a Semifinals matchup on Friday, August 8 at 3:00 PM ET.
Germany (2-2):
Nyara Sabally returned from a two-game absence to record her first career double-double, with a career-high 20 points and 13 rebounds. Sabally made her first 11 attempts from the free-throw line and finished with 14 made free throws on 93% (14-15) shooting from the line, which marks the most made free throws by a player in a single match since 1984. Sabally added two steals with an assist and became the second player since at least 2012 to record at least 20 points and 13 rebounds off the bench.
Leonie Fiebich scored nine points for Germany to go along with three assists and three rebounds. Fiebich made both of her free-throw attempts and shot 43% (3-7) from the field.
