Group Phase Recap: USA, Germany, France and Australia Advance to Quarterfinals

USA (3-0):

USA started the tournament with a 102-76 victory over Japan as Breanna Stewart powered USA’s offense with 22 points on 73% (11-15) shooting from the field. Stewart set her USA career high with 11 field goals made in the win and tied her USA career high with three blocks. Breanna added eight rebounds, three assists, and a game-high +30 plus-minus against Japan.

In USA’s second game, an 87-74 win over Belgium, Stewart became the first player since Lisa Leslie in 2004 to score more than 20 points in consecutive games for USA during the Group Phase or Preliminary Round with a USA career high 26 points, which was the second-highest scoring total by a player representing USA since 2008. She shot 57% (8-14) from the field against Belgium and added seven rebounds, five assists, and three blocks while tying for the second-most made free throws by a USA player all-time with nine.

Breanna closed out the USA Group Phase slate by scoring 13 points on 55% (6-11) shooting from the field with three rebounds in USA’s 87-68 win against Germany. Stewart became the eighth player to score at least 200 career points for USA as she tied for the third-highest Group Phase scoring average in Paris, at 20.3 points per game. Breanna added six rebounds per game and 2.7 assists per game while averaging two blocked shots, which tied for the second-highest blocks average in Paris during the Group Phase.

Against Japan, Sabrina Ionescu joined Diana Taurasi as the only players all-time with at least three made three-pointers in their USA debut as she recorded 11 points on 50% (4-8) shooting from the field to go along with five assists, three rebounds and a steal. Sabrina also became the first player in USA history with at least five assists and three made triples in their USA debut.

Ionescu continued to thrive as a playmaker as she tied for the team high with five assists against Belgium while scoring six points and grabbing three rebounds with a steal. Sabrina led USA in assists as she distributed five more in the team’s win over Germany in addition to six points and two rebounds.

Ionescu, A’ja Wilson and Alyssa Thomas were the only three USA players to record a plus-minus of +10 or better in multiple Group Phase games. Sabrina was also one of just six players in the field to record at least five assists in each of her three Group Phase games, and the only one to do so while averaging fewer than 25 minutes per game.

Germany (2-1):

In Germany’s first game in Paris. Leonie Fiebich and Nyara Sabally got off to a hot start, as they combined to make their first seven shots against Belgium and shot a combined 90% from the field in the first half with Germany holding a 46-25 lead. The match ended in an 83-69 victory for Germany as Nyara scored 16 points with five rebounds while Leonie recorded 16 points and five steals, which tied for the most steals by a player in their Games debut since 1992. Sabally’s 85.7% field goal percentage against Belgium was the second-highest field-goal percentage by any player in Paris during a game in which they attempted at least five field goals.

Germany defeated Japan 75-64 in the team’s second matchup as Fiebich made contributions across the board with six points and six rebounds, while leading the game in assists (six), and steals (three). Leonie finished the Group Stage with another multi-steal game as she scored 10 points with two rebounds and two steals in just 24 minutes as Germany fell to USA, 87-68.

Fiebich became the fourth player since 2004 to average at least three steals per game in the Group Phase or Preliminary Round after recording averages of 10.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.3 steals, and 2.7 assists per game over her first three games in Paris.

This marks the first Quarterfinals appearance for Germany all-time.

France (2-1):

In France’s first game, Marine Johannès scored seven points during the second quarter, as France outscored Canada 23-2 before ultimately winning 75-54. One game later, France defeated Nigeria, 75-54, behind a Group Phase career-high 15 points from Marine Johannès on 56% (5-9) shooting from beyond the arc to go along with five assists. Johannès’ 5 3PM marked the most by a player for France since 2000, and tied for the most by any player in Paris so far. Over France’s three Group Phase games, Marine averaged 10.3 points, 2.3 assists, and two rebounds per game while leading France to a first-place finish in Group B.

Marine Fauthoux finished the Group Phase with averages of two points, one rebound, and 0.7 blocks in just 8.6 minutes per game. Fauthoux tied for the 15th highest blocks average in the field despite playing the fewest average minutes per game among the top-30 shot-blockers in Paris. Her average plus-minus of +6.3 was the fourth-best among players representing the hosts in Paris.

Australia (1-2):

Sandy Brondello led Australia to a 79-72 win over France to earn a trip to the Quarterfinals. Under Brondello, Australia finished the Group Phase with the second-best field goal percentage (47.7%) and the second-best three-point percentage (37.3%) in the field.

China (1-2): 

Han Xu scored 10 points and added a game-high nine rebounds in China’s win over Puerto Rico, 80-58, but China was unable to advance to the Quarterfinals. Han averaged 9.7 points per game and ranked second in rebounding average at 6.7 boards per game. She was the only player among the top-30 rebounders in the field to average fewer than 15 minutes per game.
