Libs Abroad Weekly Roundup: 2/18

The “Libs Abroad Weekly Roundup” recaps performances by Liberty players currently competing internationally throughout the 2021-22 overseas season. This week, eight members of the New York Liberty organization spanning four countries qualified for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 in Sydney, Australia.

Following the Qualifiers, several countries resumed their domestic league schedule. See below for this week’s recap:

Sandy Brondello, head coach of the Australian Women’s National Team, led the Opals to a 2-1 record over their three-game tournament in Belgrade, Serbia.

After opening with a 65-52 win over Brazil, Australia fell to Serbia in a hard-fought 78-71 loss to the tournament’s host.

The Opals finished their Group A slate with a strong performance, defeating Korea 79-61. The Green and Gold will host the 2022 FIBA World Cup Tournament in Sydney in September.

Bec Allen finished the tournament with an average of 11.3 points, four rebounds and three assists per game for Australia. Allen converted on 41.6% (5-12) attempts from beyond the arc, and recorded a near double-double of 15 points and eight boards against Serbia.

Yesterday, upon returning to Spain, Bec led Valencia (15-4) to victory when she posted a 19-point outing on 66.7% (4-6) shooting from deep in the team’s 72-62 win.

Sami Whitcomb finished the tournament as the Opal’s leading scorer, finishing with 13.7 points, 4.3 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game on 55.5% (15-27) shooting from the field and 46.7% (7-15) from three.

Whitcomb’s top performance in Belgrade came against Serbia when she totaled a team-high 18 points on 63.6% (7-11) from the field and dished six assists over 33:39 minutes.

Sami will return to WNBL play with Perth (6-2) on Sunday against Southside.

Han Xu and the Chinese Women’s National Team concluded the Qualifying Tournament as the only team to remain undefeated in Serbia’s Group B, finishing a perfect 3-0.

Against France, Han tallied 12 points and three rebounds while shooting an efficient 71.4% (5-7) from the field in China’s 103-70 victory.

Marine Johannès finished the tournament as France’s leading scorer, averaging 15 points and three assists per game. Johannès shot 53.1% (17-32) from the field and 40.9% (9-22) through the three contests.

Marine recorded a team-high 16 points and five assists against China and helped France punch their ticket to Sydney for September.

Johannès and Lyon (8-4) will face Villeneuve tomorrow in their return to LFB play.

Concluding the qualifiers with averages of two points, three assists and 1.3 rebounds per game, Marine Fauthoux added a pair of points and assists against China.

Fauthoux and Landes (9-3) will also resume domestic play in France tomorrow as they take on Montpellier.

Team USA continued their momentum from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, securing a pair of victories against Belgium and Puerto Rico. Natasha Howard’s tournament was highlighted by a near double-double of seven points, eight boards and three steals against Puerto Rico in the team’s 93-55 victory.

Howard will return to the hardwood with Dynamo Kursk (14-1) in Russia on Sunday when they matchup against Dynamo Moscow.

In the United States’ undefeated tournament, Stefanie Dolson recorded a total of five points, two assists and a rebound across the two contests, including a triple against Belgium in USA’s 84-75 win.

Dolson will now set her sights on competing for Sopron Basket, a member of the EuroLeague and Hungary’s A Division. The club is currently tied for first place domestically with a 17-1 record, and will take the floor next on February 26 versus PINKK-Pecsi.

2021 WNBA Rookie of the Year Michaela Onyenwere returned from the Qualifier break with her best shooting performance of the overseas season. Onyenwere totaled 15 points on 85.7% (6-7) shooting including a triple and pair of free throws; her fourth game in double figures. Michaela also secured a trio of rebounds in Girona’s 100-59 win over Leganes.

The incoming second-year forward will look to follow up her recent outing on Sunday against Cadi La Seu.
