Seattle Evens Season Series Despite New York's Strong First Half

In their second matchup of a back-to-back set against Seattle, the New York Liberty (11-13) were outlasted by the Seattle Storm (17-7), 99-83. Tonight, Seattle evened the season series at one win apiece.

At Barclays Center, New York finished on 38.6% (27-70) shooting from the field, 40% (12-30) from three, and 89.5% (17-19) at the free throw line.

In a contest that saw 11 lead changes and 12 ties, New York finished with 29 rebounds, five of which were offensive, 19 team assists, seven steals, and five blocks.

The Liberty tallied 30 points in the paint and capitalized on 15 points off the Storm’s 12 turnovers.

New York’s 30-point first quarter was their third-highest scoring opening quarter of the season.

PLAYER NOTABLES

Four Liberty players scored in double figures in tonight’s game (Whitcomb, Ionescu, Allen, Howard). New York fell to 9-5 when four or more players score in double-figures.

Former Storm sharpshooter and 2021 Most Improved Player Award candidate, Sami Whitcomb, scored a team-high 26 points on 55.6% (5-9) shooting from deep. With her 13-point first quarter, she also set a new career-high in scoring in an opening quarter – eclipsing her previous high of 12 points in the first quarter of New York’s July 5th matchup against the Wings. Her 26-point performance was further complimented by her game-high eight assists and five rebounds.

Sabrina Ionescu
finished with 16 points on an efficient 50% (4-8) shooting, including three triples on 42.8% (3-7) shooting from deep, and four rebounds. This is her 12th game scoring in double figures this season. The Liberty are 9-3 when she scores 10+ points this season.

For the second consecutive game, Rebecca Allen scored in double figures off the bench. She finished with 13 points on 57.1% (4-7) shooting, including 60% (3-5) shooting from behind the three-point arc. Tonight, Allen recorded her 100th-career three-point field goal.

In her third game back in the Liberty lineup, Natasha Howard finished with an 11-point, 13-rebound double-double, her first double-double in Seafoam. Her season-high 13 boards were a team-high and one shy of being tied for the game-high. She also finished with a game-high three blocks. Howard has scored 10+ points in all five of her games this season.

Seattle’s Jewell Loyd led the Storm in scoring for the second consecutive night with her game-high 29 points. Her 29-point performance came on 61.5% (8-13) shooting from the field and 77.8% (7-9) shooting from deep. She also finished with five rebounds and four assists.

Breanna Stewart finished with a 19-point, 14-rebound double-double in her first regular season game of the second half.

In total, five Seattle players finished in double figures (Loyd, Stewart, Bird, Magbegor, Canada).
