Libs Abroad January 2025 Recap

Let’s catch up on all of the New York Liberty’s offseason basketball action – from overseas to Miami – as well as what to expect in February:

UNRIVALED  

This January marked the launch of Unrivaled, a 3v3 league co-founded by Liberty forward Breanna Stewart. Stewie made Unrivaled history by scoring the league’s first basket in Mist BC’s season opener against the Lunar Owls. Through her first four games with Mist BC, Stewie averaged 17.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game on 40.5% (27-63) shooting from the field.  

The Liberty are also represented at Unrivaled by Sabrina Ionescu (Phantom BC). Through January, Sab played three games with Phantom and averaged 21.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game while shooting an impressive split of 51.4% from the field and 52.8% from threeOn Jan. 31, Sab had her most notable Unrivaled performance yet, tying a league single-game record for most three pointers made with seven. In the same contest, Ionescu nearly recorded a triple-double with nine rebounds and eight assists in only 19 minutes.

ATHLETES UNLIMITED 

Athletes Unlimited Pro Basketball League is set to start in early February. The Liberty will be represented by Jaylyn Sherrod who signed with AU Pro Basketball on Jan. 13. AU is a month-long league, featuring 44 players, and has a unique twist where a weekly draft is held by the top four players of the previous week – allowing the athletes to constantly form new teams and lineup combinations.

CHINA

Marquesha Davis, the Liberty’s 2024 First Round draftee, has continued to shine with Shandong in the WCBA. In the month of January, Davis took full advantage of her extended minutes (25.2 MPG) and averaged 12.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, and one assist per game. Davis had her best showing of the month on January 23 with 18 points, four rebounds, and two assists while converting on 60.7% (7-11) from the field.

Han Xu and Sichuan Yuanda continued their pursuit of a third consecutive WCBA championship, going a near perfect 8-1 to begin 2025. In eight appearances, Han posted averages of 16.5 points and 4.9 rebounds on an efficient 50.2% (58-89) shooting. On Jan. 15, Han scored 20 points on 76.9% (10-13) from the field; her eighth 20+ point performance of the season thus far.

TURKEY 

The Liberty re-signed guard/forward Kennedy Burke on Feb. 1, marking her sixth WNBA season, and second with the Liberty. Burke signed with Ormanspor in Turkey at the very end of 2024 and has made an immediate impact. In her first four performances of 2025, she led her club to a 3-1 record in January. Across 36 minutes per night, KB averaged 16.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, and one assist per contest on 57.4% (15-27) from the field and 39.2% (8-21) from distance.

New York is also represented in Turkey by Nyara Sabally with Fenerbahçe. The club went 5-1 in January with Sabally on the floor where she compiled averages of 10.7 points and 6.2 rebounds on an efficient 52% (26-53). Most recently, she had a standout performance on January 28 against Leonie Fiebich and Valencia BC, scoring 10 points and securing five rebounds to lead Fenerbahçe to a 88-71 EuroLeague victory.

Marine Fauthoux has been competing for Mersin in the KBSL and EuroLeague. Fauthoux, who the Liberty maintain player rights to entering 2025, has averaged a combined 8.8 points, 6.4 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game through five games in January. Fauthoux closed out January with her top performance of the month, scoring 13 points and dishing eight assists on 60% (3-5) from the field and 50% (2-4) from three in a win against Landes.

SPAIN

2024 WNBA All-Rookie team selection, Leonie Fiebich, is currently playing for Valencia BC in Spain’s LF Endesa and EuroLeague. Through her first seven games with Valencia (5-2), the reigning LF Endesa MVP is averaging 10.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists a game. She has continued her elite scoring efficiency with a combined monthly shooting split of 45.2% (21-52) from the field and 44.2% (12-33) from three. On Jan. 12, Fiebich tallied her top performance of the season thus against Ensino, totaling 20 points on a stellar  71.4% (5-7) from three.

ITALY

Liberty guard Ivana Dojkić , who competes for Schio between Serie A1 and EuroLeague, went a perfect 7-0 through the month of January. Dojkić amassed averages of 11.2 points, 4.4 assists, 2.1 rebounds on a combined shooting total of 42.2% (22-58). On Jan. 18th, Dojkić had a standout performance in a win against San Martino, recording 11 points, five assists, four rebounds, and shot 83.3% (5-6) from the field.

FRANCE

On Feb. 1, the New York Liberty signed wing, Esmery Martinez, to a training camp contract. Martinez, who was originally drafted No. 17 overall in 2024 by New York, is currently competing for Flammes in France’s LFB. In the month of January, where Flammes went 3-1, Es totaled averages just shy of a double-double with eight points, nine rebounds, and 2.8 assists.
