Zahui B Scores Career-High 37 Points in Bounce Back Victory Over Sparks, 98-92
LOS ANGELES, CA- The New York Liberty (3-5) finished its west coast trip with a big win over the Los Angeles Sparks (3-4) in front of more than 11,000 fans at the Staples Center on Saturday night. The 98-92 decision came down to the wire as both teams traded buckets and leads from start to finish.
Amanda Zahui B led all scorers in the game with a career-high 37 points on 81.3% (13-16) shooting from the field and 87.3.% (7-8) from the three-point line. Zauhi’s hot hand set her only three points shy of the Liberty’s franchise single scoring game, which is held by Cappie Pondexter (40).
Kia Nurse added a season-high 26 points to the Liberty victory on 41.7% (5-12) from the field and 93.8% (15-16) from the free throw line. She also grabbed a season-high 7 rebounds.
LIBERTY NOTES:
Zauhi B’s 37 points also ties with Becky Hammon for the best single-game scoring total against the Sparks, second only to Liberty head coach Katie Smith’s 46 points scored against Los Angeles.
Zahui also tied the franchise record for three’s made in a game (7).
Kia Nurse made 15 free throws in the contest, tying her career-high. She shot 6-6 in the last minute of the game.
Tanisha Wright recorded her 400th career steal in the game.
Brittany Boyd’s 12 assists is a new career-high, beating out her old record by one.
For the second consecutive game, all Liberty players who touched the floor scored at least 2 points.
Asia Durr added 11 points on 50% (5-10) from the field. Tina Charles also added 9 points and 13 rebounds to the team’s victory.
New York’s win tonight is coach Katie Smith’s first win against LA as a head coach.
SPARKS NOTES:
Three Sparks players scored double figures. Chiney Ogwmike led the team’s scoring with a season-high double-double including 26 points on 60% (12-20) from the field and 14 rebounds.
The Sparks shot 46.7% from the field and 34.8% from the three-point line.
Los Angeles outrebounded New York 42-35.
