Jonquel Jones named 2023 Commissioner’s Cup Championship MVP

Total of $25,500 raised for Callen-Lorde

LAS VEGAS – AUGUST 16, 2023 – Last night, in the franchise’s first-ever Commissioner’s Cup Championship appearance, the New York Liberty defeated the Las Vegas Aces, 82-63, bringing home the first piece of hardware in team history.

Jonquel Jones was named the 2023 Commissioner’s Cup MVP after recording a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. She also added a pair of blocks and converted on an efficient 50% (5-10) from the floor.

The Liberty’s defense held the Aces to less than 65 points for the second time in consecutive meetings and handed them their first loss at home in 2023.

Breanna Stewart became the first player with multiple Commissioner’s Cup titles, including the inaugural matchup in 2021 as a member of the Seattle Storm where she was named the first-ever MVP.

With last night’s championship win, the New York Liberty raised a total of $25,500 for Callen-Lorde, which will support the organization’s work providing healthcare to unhoused LGBTQ+ young adults, transgender healthcare, women’s healthcare, HIV testing, prevention and treatment regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.
