Liberty Sign Guard Layshia Clarendon to Open Free Agency

BROOKLYN – February 10, 2020 – The New York Liberty announced today that the team has signed free agent Layshia Clarendon. Per team policy, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Clarendon joins the Liberty after one season with the Connecticut Sun where she averaged 6.2 PPG, 2.4 RPG and 2.1 APG.

“Layshia is an elite facilitator and floor general with an extremely high basketball IQ,” said Liberty Head Coach Walt Hopkins. “She not only leads vocally, but also by consistently modeling a tireless work ethic and respect for those around her. She is going to be a massive boon to our roster and our team culture – both on, and off of the court.”

Originally selected 9th overall in the 2013 WNBA Draft by the Indiana Fever, Clarendon was acquired by the Dream in 2016 from the Indiana Fever for rights to the 2016 WNBA second round draft pick. In July 2018, Clarendon was acquired by the Connecticut Sun in exchange for Alex Bentley.

The 5-foot-9 guard and WNBA All-Star (2017) will enter her 8thWNBA season in New York. She is also currently on the USA National Team that will compete in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo this July.

Clarendon, a native of San Bernardino, California played four years at UC Berkeley, where she remains the 5thleading scorer in Golden Bears’ women’s basketball history with 1,820 career points.

The Liberty will tip-off the 2020 regular season at the Connecticut Sun on Saturday, May 16 at 7 p.m. New York’s inaugural home opener at Barclays Center will be against the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday, May 17 at 6 p.m.
