Liberty Defeat Fever 73-65, First 2-0 Start Since 2016

For the second time in three days, the New York Liberty (2-0) matched up against the Indiana Fever (0-2). Today, the Liberty won their second consecutive contest, 73-65 matching their win total from the 2020 season. This is New York’s first 2-0 start since 2016.

At Bankers Life Fieldhouse, New York shot 40.0% from the field and 36.0% from beyond the arc. The team also shot 80.0% from the charity stripe.

The Liberty finished the contest with 38 rebounds, only two less than the Fever compared to 28 rebounds (17 less than the Fever) in Friday’s matchup. New York also finished with 17 assists and 19 bench points.

 

Key Runs:

Q1: New York opened the contest on a 20-12 run in the first 4 minutes of regulation.

The Liberty outscored the Fever 31-18 in the first quarter. Betnijah Laney totaled 11 of New York’s 31 first quarter points.

Q2: New York went on an 8-3 run in the first two minutes of the second quarter forcing an Indiana timeout.

Although the Liberty led by as many as 19 points in the first half, Indiana went on a 15-2 run to cut into the Liberty’s lead.

Indiana held New York to just 10 second quarter points.

Q3: After a slow start for both teams, New York got out to an 8-2 run before Indiana’s 4-0 burst to close the quarter.

New York outscored Indiana 17-14 in the third quarter.

Q4: In the final quarter, New York went on an 9-5 run to open the quarter.

Indiana answered with a 5-0 run to cut the Fever deficit to single digits (9) with 3 minutes remaining in the contest. The Liberty held onto their lead to secure their second win of the season.

PLAYER NOTABLES

For the second consecutive game Michaela Onyenwere (11), Sabrina Ionescu (12), and Betnijah Laney (20) scored in double figures for New York. Jazmine Jones also scored in double figures today, finishing with 10 points on 57% shooting from the field and 100% (2-2) shooting from three.

For the second consecutive game, Betnijah Laney scored a team and game-high 20 points with 4 assists.

Sabrina Ionescu shot 50.0% (2-4) from deep, finishing with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Michaela Onyenwere totaled 11 points and 5 rebounds.

Kylee Shook and Sami Whitcomb lead New York on the glass, with 7 and 6 rebounds, respectively. Shook finished with 6 points, while Whitcomb added 5.

Rebecca Allen made her 2021 Liberty debut, recording 3 points and 5 rebounds in 15:03 minutes off the bench.

Indiana’s Kelsey Mitchell led scoring for Indiana with 16 points on 33.3% shooting from the firled and beyond the arc.

In addition to taking three charges in the third quarter, Danielle Robinson totaled 13 points and 5 rebounds for the Fever.
