After an injury plagued 2015 season that saw her play just 2 games before undergoing season-ending surgery, and a late start to 2016 as she trained with the Australian National Team prior to the 2016 Summer Olympics, Rebecca Allen was able to log her 1st full WNBA season in 2017, showing the Liberty and the rest of the league how her dynamic skillset and athleticism would shine through in the best league in the world.
REBECCA ALLEN 2017 SEASON STATS
While the 2016 season may have featured slightly higher peaks for Allen in terms of performance (her career-high of 19 points came at Washington last July), her 2017 campaign was more of a showcase of everything she had to offer.
At first, Allen appeared to be primarily a 3-point shooter, nailing 17-of-30 attempts (.567) in 21 games last year, but worked hard on the rest of her game, particularly her ability to drive to the rim, and put the ball on the floor and get to the basket. Perhaps most importantly, she really honed in on her rebounding and defense, two staples of the Liberty’s success over the last three years.
Allen averaged a career-high 2.0 rpg last season, including 13 on the offensive end. She also blocked 13 shots, using her speed and length to make driving on her a formidable challenge. Allen ended the season expressing her desire to continue to working on those same skills Liberty fans saw her develop this season, primarily driving to the basket and defense. WIth defenders having to close out on the perimeter, a strong handle and more experience finishing at the basket will go a long way towards rounding our her offensive game.
