Liberty Names Swin Cash Director of Franchise Development

NEW YORK, NY – January 10, 2017 – The New York Liberty has added WNBA legend Swin Cash as Director of Franchise Development, it was announced today by Team President Isiah Thomas.

Assuming a first-of-its-kind WNBA front office position, Cash will assist with both business and basketball operations, aiding in the growth of the New York Liberty franchise, in addition to interfacing with team players and coaches.

She joins current Los Angeles Sparks General Manager Penny Toler as the only former WNBA players to assume a front office position immediately following their playing careers, but is the first to also assist with business development.

“I’m truly excited to join the New York Liberty front office as Director of Franchise Development,” said Cash. “Over my 15-year career in the WNBA, I have been able to not only play at the highest level on the court, but also serve the players as the VP of the WNBPA union. I’m thankful to the Liberty organization and President Isiah Thomas for the opportunity to continue in a leadership role with the team and city I finished my career in. I’m just as committed in our front office as I was as a player to helping our team bring a championship to New York.”

“Swin Cash brings a unique blend of knowledge and experience to the New York Liberty from her time as a player, role as vice president of the WNBPA, and numerous philanthropic efforts; she will be an outstanding asset in helping direct our franchise,” said Thomas. “It is important for the Liberty to continue to be a leader in providing opportunities to former players, and developing this role for Swin in our front office was a top priority.”

Cash was acquired by the Liberty in 2014, and played her final two and a half seasons in New York, helping lead the Liberty to back-to-back playoff berths, and a franchise record 23 victories in 2015.

She retired at the conclusion of the 2016 WNBA season as one of the most decorated players in league history. Named one of the WNBA’s Top 20 Best and Most Influential players, Cash won three WNBA championships (2003, 2006, 2010) and ended her career ranked 14th in scoring (5,119 points), 4th in games played (479), and 7th in rebounds (2,251).

A four-time WNBA All-Star Selection, Cash also won two Olympic gold medals with the U.S. Women’s National Team (2004, 2012). She is one of just two players in league history to amass 5,000 points, 2,000 rebounds, and 1,000 assists in her career.

Off the court, she continues to shine in front of the camera covering sports and cultural issues for several different outlets.  Cash is also the founder of Swin Cash Enterprises LLC, Cash Building Blocks, LP, an urban development company that renovates and offers affordable homes for low income families, and the Cash for Kids Foundation, with a mission to “motivate, educate & elevate” kids through physical fitness, nutrition, education, cultural trips, and sports camps.

The 2017 New York Liberty season tips off at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, May 13, against the San Antonio Stars.
