International Update Oct. 26

The international basketball season has wrapped up the second week of major competition with New York Liberty players contributing in a major way across the globe. As of this week a total of six Liberty players have seen action in the PBL, WNBL, KBSL, BSNF and WCBA league. Kiah Stokes will begin her overseas career the first week of November with the Samsung Blue Minx in South Korea, but the “block machine” is already drawing a fair amount of attention halfway around the world.

Tina Charles is playing in China for the first time in her career, and has stepped into international play to dominate in the paint, averaging 22.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. The Xinjiang team is off to a 4-0 start with this being their first season in the WCBA league.

Sugar Rodgers continues to have no trouble finding ways to scores, as since she left to join Atenienses de Manati in Puerto Rico, her team has gone unbeaten, rattling off four-straight wins. hShe is averaging 21.5 ppg and draining more than three 3-pointers per game.

Canik BLD hosted Hatay for their second game of the season, but lost 82-63 after Hatay controlled most of the action. Courtney Paris led her team to a victory while Essence tried to power a third-quarter comeback attempt that fell short. Essence contributed with 4 points and 2 rebounds on the defensive end. She is ranked 7th in the league for blocks per game at 1.0.

EPIPHANNY PRINCE #10- Russia

Dynamo Kursk saw varied results this week as it managed to improve to 4-0 in the Russian Premier League with a 65-61 win over Sparta, but fell to 1-1 in the Euroleague after suffering a 62-55 setback to Galatasaray. Prince has not seen explosive scoring numbers but is finding other ways to make an impact, averaging 4.0 assists and 4.5 steals per game in Premier League action. She dished out four assists in the win over Emma Meesseman and Sparta, and finished with eight points and four dimes against Jewell Loyd and Galatasaray.

Sugar has played significant minutes for the Atenienses fe Manati and has been a dominant scoring force on the court, leading the squad to a 4-0 record since she joined the team two weeks ago. She has been one of the leaders in points for the the team, making her one of the four Atenienses players scoring in double figures in each of the last two games. In the BSNF league she is averaging 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists.

Botasspor Adana clinched their first win of the season in a nail-biting overtime game against Abdullah Gul. At halftime Botas trailed by two until they came back to tie the game at the end of regulation and force an extra period. Avery was one of the four players to score double digits and also contributed eight rebounds. She is averaging 15.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in the KBSL league.

CAROLYN SWORDS – Sydney Uni Flames

The Sydney Uni Flames are now 3-1, defeating Mebloure 93-96 at home over the weekend. The host (Sydney Uni Flames) trailed by three at the half, but were able to ramp up the energy in the second half. This was a great shooting night for the Sydney Flames who shot 63.6 percent from the field. Carolyn accounted for eight points and dished out three assist. The Sydney Flames take on SEQ in the next game, but  Rebecca Allen will not play as she continues to rehab from a knee injury.

The Xinjiang team has an undefeated record, going 4-0 to start the season despite being a new team the WCBA league, joining just this year. Tina Charles has fit in perfectly, scoring in double figures and generally dominating every game so far while averaging a double-double of 22.0 points and 11.0 rebounds with 1.8 assists. In the recent win against Beijing, Tina scored 26 points going 11-18 from the field and collected 15 rebounds to lead the Xinjiang to a 21 point victory.
