Its a line that was made famous by David Schwimmer's character Ross Gellar on Friends, but will soon enough be the most popular catchphrase in arenas around the country as the WNBA ends its month long game hiatus and opens its doors to welcome back regular season game action on Thursday, August 28.
The Liberty is about to embark on the final leg of the 2008 WNBA regular season, heading into a schedule that will entail nine games in 18 days, with five on its home court and four of the opponents hailing from the Eastern Conference.
The leagues youngest squad is hoping to continue where it left off before the designated time off began. When the Liberty last played, it captured its second victory of the summer at Philips Arena over the Dream on July 27 to take a 2-0 series advantage. The teams longest road win streak of three games was established.
Before the break, New York also saw success when playing the role of host, as the Liberty shined in the City spotlight on July 25 against one of the Western Conferences top squads. The Liberty achieved its third season series sweep of the summer and sixth straight Garden win with a triumphant last second shot from Janel McCarville over Lisa Leslie, Candace Parker and the Sparks.
With the season kicking back into gear, New York is being handed a tough assignment, as it essentially is starting its season over again after having a hot finish last month. The Liberty will host the Chicago Sky on Thursday, August 28 an opponent that it has yet to face this summer and will endure all three games of the season series after the Break.
At 15-10, a second place Conference ranking and a half game from the No. 1 spot, the Liberty is hoping that history is on its side as the end of the season is in sight. In seasons when there are Olympic Games, New York has turned in some stellar finishes. Back in 2000, New York recorded its first 20-win season in franchise history, finished in first place in the East and made its second consecutive WNBA Finals appearance. In 2004, the Liberty finished with an 18-16 record, was second in the East and reached the Conference Finals under then interim head coach Pat Coyle.
