NEW YORK, NY – June 4, 2018 – New York Liberty forward Tina Charles was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week after leading the team to a pair of victories over the Dallas Wings and Indiana Fever, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon. Over the two-game span, the 2017 WNBA Most Valuable Player first runner-up, averaged 28.5 points and 10 rebounds per game.
On the season, her ninth in the WNBA, Charles is averaging a league-best 23.5 points on a .469 shooting clip. Her per-game average of nine rebounds is good for fourth in the league. The heralded veteran has also registered a double-double on three consecutive occasions.
On May 29, Charles scored a season-high 34 points to compliment 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 94-89 victory over the Wings, the team’s first of the season. The game marked the seventh time in her career where she has finished with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds.
Charles followed up her standout performance with a 23-point and 10-rebound performance in a thrilling 87-81 overtime win over the Fever on June 2. Her pair of free throw makes with 8.6 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, forced overtime and ultimately rewarded New York the win.
This is the 29th time that Charles has won the award, a WNBA record. She has earned seven Player of the Week honors in each of the past two seasons, the most by any player in a season in WNBA history.
Charles has scored 4,866 points in her decorated career, and she is 10 points away from surpassing Hall of Famer and three-time MVP Sheryl Swoopes to move to 19th on the all-time scoring list.
Charles and the Liberty resume action tomorrow, June 5, against the Phoenix Mercury at Madison Square Garden. The action begins at 11 AM (ET).
