Now the most seasoned veteran on a young Liberty squad, Shavonte Zellous brought leadership and experience during the 2017 season, and stepped her game up, particularly on the offensive end, when the Liberty needed it most. Much of what New York achieved during the 2017 season can be attributed to dynamic way Zellous effects a team on and off the court.
SHAVONTE ZELLOUS 2017 SEASON STATS
Her best scoring surge of the season, and of her 9-year WNBA career, came at a time that the Liberty needed a boost with Epiphanny Prince and Kia Vaughn missing time to compete in Europe. Zellous was there to step up and help the team post a 5-1 record during that stretch in June, with 3 20-point games, scoring in double-figures every time.
She really tormented the Dallas Wings, scoring 20-plus points against them twice during that span, which included a win on the road where she nailed an off-balance 15-footer with just 0.6 remaining to tie the game, a contest that turned into a New York win in overtime.
Zellous averaged 11.7 ppg, an improvement of nearly 3.0 ppg from her 2016 season with the Liberty, and her highest average scoring total since the 2013 season when she averaged a career-high 14.7 ppg and was named the league’s Most Improved Player and an All-Star. She also posted career-highs in rebounding (4.0 ppg) and assists (2.8 apg) finishing 2nd on the Liberty in assists.
The 2016 season was also a bit of a throw back for Zellous, who got to the line even more than Tina Charles, leading the Liberty with 164 attempts from the stripe, that most since her rookie season when she led the league with 181.
Hard to believe, but Zellous posted the 1st double-double of her career back in July, when she scored 14 points with 11 rebounds agains the Sky at Madison Square Garden; it was the 1st double-digit rebound game of her career.
