NY Liberty International Update 11/19

For many Liberty players, the weekend was full of action with the FIBA Pre-Qualifying Tournaments in Asia-Oceania, Americas and Africa.

All of the 16 participants of the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2020 have been confirmed and the Liberty will be well-represented in the international games to determine which teams will contend for the 12 Olympic spots. In Europe, teams will not play FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournaments, but qualify six teams directly to the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2020 from FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2019. These teams are Spain, France, Serbia, Great Britain, Sweden and Belgium. The Olympic Qualifying Tournaments will be held next February in Belgium (Ostend), China (Foshan), France (Bourges) and Serbia (Belgrade).

The 16 teams the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments are Australia (Rebecca Allen), Belgium, Brazil, Britain, Canada (Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe, Kia Nurse), China (Han Xu), France (Bria Hartley, Marine Johannes), Japan, Mozambique, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Serbia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden (Amanda Zahui B) and the United States.

The draw ceremony will take place at the FIBA headquarters on Nov. 27, 2019, with top three teams from each tournament, consisting of four teams apiece, qualifying for the Olympics.

FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2018 champions USA and the Olympic Games host Japan will play in the qualification tournaments, but will advance through to the Tokyo Olympics regardless of their results.
