In Saturday afternoon’s second-annual AAPI Heritage Game, the New York Liberty (2-1) defeated the Connecticut Sun (3-1), 81-65, in the first game of their 2023 four-game season series.

At Barclays Center, the Liberty finished on 47.1% (32-68) shooting from the field, 40.9% (9-22) from three, and 61.5% (8-13) at the free throw line.

New York out-scored Connecticut by 12 points in the third quarter to take a six-point, 57-51, lead into the fourth. New York also set season-highs in offensive rebounds (11), steals (10), and blocks (5) in today’s contest.

Including her 21-point performance tonight, Breanna Stewart set a franchise record for the most points scored over a three-game span to open a season with her 78 total points scored to open the 2023 campaign.

In today’s game, New York finished with three double-figure scorers (Stewart, Vandersloot, Ionescu).

Breanna Stewart finished with a game-high 21 points on 43.8% (7-16) shooting from the field, including 50% (3-6) from three, six rebounds, a game-high six steals, five assists, and a game-high four blocks. At the 2:38 mark of the first, she recorded her 250th career steal, and her six-steal performance tied a career-high.

Highlighted by the first double-double of her Liberty career, Courtney Vandersloot added 18 points on 70% (7-10) shooting from the floor, including 66.7% (2-3) shooting from three, a game-high 10 assists, and six rebounds.

Sabrina Ionescu finished with 17 points, including 44.4% (4-9) from three, seven rebounds, and three assists. Today, she knocked down her 150th career three-pointer at the 7:33 mark of the first quarter.

Kayla Thornton tied for a team-high with seven rebounds, adding six points and two assists.

Stefanie Dolson recorded her 500th career assist at the 1:19 mark of the first quarter, ultimately finishing with four assists, two points, and two rebounds.

At the 8:55 mark of the second, 2022 No. 5 overall selection Nyara Sabally scored the first basket of her WNBA career. In her regular-season debut, she finished with six points and three rebounds.

 For Connecticut, Tiffany Hayes finished with 16 points and four rebounds, while DeWanna Bonner added 14 points and seven rebounds.
