New York Drops Penultimate Game of Regular Season to Connecticut, 98-69

On Wednesday night, the New York Liberty (11-20) fell to the No. 1 seed Connecticut Sun (25-6), 98-69, in their third and final matchup of the 2021 regular season. Despite tonight’s loss, the Liberty remain in playoff contention alongside the Washington Mystics and Los Angeles Sparks.

At Mohegan Sun Arena, the Liberty finished on 41.9% (26-62) shooting from the field, 28% (7-25) from three, and 90.9% (10-11) at the free throw line.

The Liberty recorded 21 rebounds, 18 team assists, 30 points in the paint, and capitalized on 17 points off the Sun’s 21 turnovers. The game saw 12 lead changes and five ties.

PLAYER NOTABLES

Three Liberty players scored in double figures in tonight’s game (Howard, Onyenwere, Ionescu).

In her first game against the Sun this season, Natasha Howard finished the contest with a game-high 25 points on 55.6% (10-18) shooting from the field. Howard also finished with a team-high eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and two steals.

Three-time Rookie of the Month honoree Michaela Onyenwere recorded 14 points off the bench, including 83.3% (5-6) shooting from the field and 66.7% (2-3) from beyond the three-point line. In the first half, Onyenwere scored 12 points on a perfect 100% (5-5) shooting.

Sabrina Ionescu had another all-around performance finishing with 12 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Tonight’s 12-point outing marked her 19th game scoring in double figures this season, and tenth consecutive 10+ point outing following the Olympic break.

Jonquel Jones finished with an 18-point, 13-rebound double-double. Her 18 points came on 61.5% (8-13) shooting from the field and 100% (2-2) from the free throw line. She also added four assists and two blocks.

DeWanna Bonner also finished with 18 points on 54.5% (6-11) shooting from the field along with four rebounds and four assists.
