Libs Abroad Weekly Roundup Presented by Withings: 1/13

Another Friday, another Libs Abroad Weekly Roundup! This week, we have several season-high performances to recap and one of the most exciting head-to-head Libs Abroad matchups to date where Marine Fauthoux and Michaela Onyenwere both led their squads to a EuroLeague overtime thriller. In the first Libs Abroad head-to-head matchup of the week, Sami Whitcomb led the Perth Lynx to a 75-64 win over Jocelyn Willoughby’s Sydney Flames. Whitcomb was the team’s second-leading scorer with 18 points on 50% (4-8) from three, complemented by seven boards and five assists.

Earlier today, Sami went off for a season-best 33 points in Perth’s 94-86 victory against Southside, where she shot a combined 60% (12-20) from the field and 44.4% (4-9) from distance. Her 33-point explosion marked the most points of the Libs Abroad 2022-23 campaign thus far.

After being sidelined for two weeks with a minor shoulder injury, Marine Fauthoux returned to the lineup with zero signs of rust, compiling her best performance of the season when she took on Michaela Onyenwere and Avenida in EuroLeague play.

In Landes’ thrilling 71-64 overtime victory, Fauthoux led all scorers with a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds on 46.7% (7-15) shooting from the field, 75% (3-4) from three, and 100% (8-8) at the line. Last Sunday, in her first game back, Marine totaled 12 points and seven assists on a combined 66.7% (6-9) from the floor.

Marine Johannès continued her momentum into the second week of January, recording another pair of strong outings.

On Sunday, Johannès dropped a team-high 22 points alongside four assists on 53.8% (7-13) from the field and 50% (5-10) from distance. Yesterday, she followed up with an 11-point, six-board, and three-assist performance where she helped Lyon advance to Round 2 of the EuroCup playoffs with a 91-72 win over Arka Gdynia.

Jocelyn Willoughby continued to guide the Sydney Flames’ offense–extending her double-digit scoring streak to nine games.

Over the weekend, against Sami Whitcomb’s Perth Lynx, Willoughby totaled a well-balanced line of 16 points, five assists, and four boards over 37 minutes. Yesterday, she flirted with a triple-double after tallying 21 points, eight rebounds, and six assists in an 81-77 victory against Adelaide, where she helped lead a 23-point comeback.

Michaela Onyenwere led the way for Avenida in both of their contests this week, recording a pair of team-high scoring performances and eclipsing her season-high in scoring twice.

Last Saturday, Michaela totaled 17 points and six boards in Avenida’s 76-62 LF Endesa win against Zaragoza. In Wednesday’s EuroLeague thriller against Marine Fauthoux, Onyenwere finished with a near double-double of 18 points and nine rebounds on 50% (7-14) from the field and 40% (2-5) from deep.

Sika Koné extended her double-digit scoring streak to 16 contests after she posted a game-changing double-double of 15 points and 20 rebounds that lifted Gran Canaria to a 73-71 victory versus Leganes. Sunday’s performance marked Sika’s 12th double-double of the LF Endesa season.

Raquel Carrera added to Valencia’s offensive output in a pair of LF Endesa and EuroLeague victories this week. Carrera finished with nine points on three assists in a 96-43 rout of Araski, followed by an eight-point outing where she shot 75% (3-4) in the team’s 82-75 win over USK Praha.
