Libs Abroad: Top Performances from February

Another Libs Abroad month in the books, and our squad has been playing #LibertyLoud! February’s Libs Abroad recap will highlight the top Liberty performances across the world. We will begin with one of the newest members of the Liberty, and February’s Libs Abroad Player of the Month: Betnijah Laney.

Betnijah Laney, who signed with the Liberty in free agency on February 2, has been a key contributor to her overseas club’s success in the 2020-21 season. Elitzur Ramla is currently in first place at 12-1 in Israel’s D1 League, as well as 2-0 in EuroCup play. Between both leagues, Betnijah is averaging 18.2 points, 8.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.

Rebecca Allen has continued her successful overseas campaign with Valencia Basket through February. Allen’s top performance of the month was a 15 point, 3 rebound and 3 steal night while shooting 3-5 (60%) from deep in a 69-58 win on February 20. The Australia-native is shooting a combined 44.8% from three-point range between both leagues. Valencia is now 23-1 in their domestic league, and 3-0 in EuroCup action.

Joyner Holmes has kept up her successful play for Maccabi Ra’anana in Israel. Through 13 games, Holmes is still averaging a double-double of 15.5 points and 11.1 boards per contest, as well as 4.5 assists. On February 22, her 23rd birthday, Joyner recorded 20 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Most recently, Holmes netted a season-high 27 points on February 25.

Natasha Howard, who the Liberty acquired via trade on February 10 from the Seattle Storm, is currently playing overseas with Umana Reyer Venezia in Italy. Howard, who joined the club after the new year, is averaging 14.2 points and 7.8 rebounds in domestic league play. Natasha also led her team to three-straight EuroCup wins while posting 11.0 points per game. Venezia is now 19-1 in Serie A1 play and 3-0 internationally, which is first place in both standings.

Keep an eye out for some potential Liberty vs. Liberty EuroCup playoff matchups between Betnijah Laney, Bec Allen and Natasha Howard over the next few months!

On February 23, Marine Johannès put together a performance reminiscent of her 2019 rookie season with the Liberty where she was perfect from the field against the Los Angeles Sparks and Chicago Sky. In an 87-49 win, Marine shot a near-perfect 7-9 from the field, including 3 triples and 6 assists. Johannes and Lyon ASVEL are now 9-3 in their domestic league, and 4-2 in EuroLeague.

Despite only having three games scheduled in February due to a mid-season break for FIBA EuroBasket Qualifiers, Kiah Stokes and Fenerbahçe continued their dominant run in domestic league play. Stokes, who suited up for two of the team’s three February contests, averaged an impressive 13.5 rebounds per game. On the season, Kiah is averaging 7.0 points, 10.3 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.3 blocks on 51.5% shooting from the field. Fenerbahçe will match up against rival Galatasaray on March 17 in the EuroLeague Quarter-Finals.

Jocelyn Willoughby, the reigning Libs Abroad Player of the Month, is continuing her impressive overseas play with Hapoel Petah Tikva. Willoughby is averaging 23.6 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 45.5% from the field and 47.0% (31-66) from beyond the arc over 13 contests. While making a case for league MVP, Jocelyn is simultaneously planning and operating her own virtual book club: Read What You Sow.
