NEW YORK, NY – AUGUST 18, 2016 – The New York Liberty will celebrate the career of forward Swin Cash, one of the most decorated and influential women’s basketball players in history, with a retirement ceremony following its contest against the Seattle Storm at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, Sept. 7.
Cash, who announced on June 7 via an article on The Players’ Tribune, her decision to retire at the conclusion of the 2016 WNBA season, has enjoyed a nearly unmatched level of success throughout her close to two-decades in the basketball spotlight.
“Swin Cash is a legend of the game, and it is a tremendous honor for our franchise that she will be ending her storied career wearing a New York Liberty uniform,” said Team President Isiah Thomas. “Role model, leader, champion – Swin’s remarkable impact and accomplishments transcend basketball, and we look forward to celebrating everything she has meant to the game, the community, and her fans.”
Earlier this season, Cash was named one of the WNBA’s 20 greatest and most influential players in its history, having won three WNBA Championships (2003, 2006, 2010), two Olympic gold medals (2004, 2012) and two NCAA Championships (2000, 2002). At the conclusion of the season, she will end her career ranked in the top-15 in WNBA history in scoring, rebounding, assists, and games played.
Cash currently ranks 13th in scoring (5,075 points) and seventh in rebounding (2,492 rebounds). She is one of two players in league history to amass more than 5,000 points, 2,000 rebounds, and 1,000 assists, the other being Tamika Catchings, who is also retiring at the end of the 2016 WNBA season.
Off the court, she founded the Cash for Kids charitable organization in 2005, which uses sports and cultural activities to motivate, educate, and elevate. Cash has served as a broadcaster for ESPN, MSG Network, CBS Sports, and NBC Sports, most recently broadcasting Olympic women’s basketball for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
