On Friday, the New York Liberty (4-1) defeated the Chicago Sky (3-3), 77-76, in the first game of their 2023 four-game season series, marking New York’s fourth-consecutive victory.

At Wintrust Arena, the Liberty finished on 46.3% (31-67) shooting from the field, 34.6% (9-26) from three, and 85.7% (6-7) at the free throw line.

New York finished with four double-digit scorers in tonight’s game (Stewart, Laney, Thornton, Jones).

Highlighted by a game-winning bank shot with 7.6 seconds remaining in the game, Breanna Stewart finished with 19 points on 43.8% (7-16) shooting from the floor, including 37.5% (3-8) from three, 11 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks, marking her fourth double-double of the season. This is just the third time in WNBA history that a player recorded a double-double in four of their first five games with a new team and the first time since 2005.

Highlighted by nine second-quarter points, Betnijah Laney finished with a season-high 17 points on 57.1% (8-14) shooting from the field, including 100% (1-1) from three, three rebounds, and two assists. At the 0:18 mark of the second quarter, Laney knocked down her 100th career three-pointer.

Kayla Thornton finished with a season-high 12 points on 71.4% (5-7) shooting from the field, including 100% (2-2) from three, two rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

Jonquel Jones added 10 points on 57.1% (4-7) shooting from the field, including 33.3% (1-3) from three, two rebounds, and a block.

In her first return to Chicago since departing in free agency, Courtney Vandersloot finished with eight points, eight assists, and three rebounds.

For Chicago, Kahleah Copper finished with a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds, while Alanna Smith added a career-high 18 points on 100% (7-7) shooting from the field, including 100% (4-4) from three, six rebounds, and three assists.
