International Update Nov. 2

The New York Liberty players are still dominating overseas as they wrap up their 3rd week of competition. Some teams are still undefeated while others are fighting to move up in their leagues standings.

Epiphanny Prince has found her way to the basket to put numbers on the board in both the Premier League and Euroleague. Both Sugar Rodgers and Tina Charles have continued to be dominate for their teams, posting double-doubles in their recent games.

For Rodgers, who joined the Puerto Rican BSNF league late in the season, the playoffs are underway, and after helping her team finish the regular season by winning five of its final six games, Atenienses de Manati surged to 13-5 to finish in second place with a bye into the semifinals.

Charles has just been unstoppable for unbeaten Xinjiang, averaging a double-double of 23.3 points and 11.2 rebounds per game, ranking third in the league in both categories.

Carolyn Swords has been a key component as well for her team, playing significant minutes and scoring in double figures. They fell to South East Queensland in OT, which is the Liberty teammate Rebecca Allen’s squad, but she is rehabbing her knee and has yet to make her season debut for SEQ.

Rookie Kiah Stokes opens the South Korean season on Nov. 2, Essence Carson and Avery Warley-Talbert continue to compete in Turkey. Warley-Talbert was off this week, while Carson and Canik BLD fell to Abdullah Gul.

Essence Carson failed to score for Canik Belediyesi in a 69-56 loss to Abdullah Gul, as Canik falls to 1-2 early in the Superleague season, but has been able to have an impact on the defensive end averaging 2.3 rebounds per game. She returns to action on Nov. 7 to face Fenerbahce. Carson is averaging 6.7 ppg and 2.3 rpg so far this season.

Dynamo Kursk saw a big win in the Euroleague this week and experienced their first loss in the PBL league. This was a key game for both teams to qualify for the top position in the league. Dynamo completely outrebounded Nadezhda Orenburg (41-27) but still came up short of the win. American guard Kayla McBride scored 20 points to help guide her team. Epiphanny Prince and Seimone Augustus chipped in 10 points each as the offensive leaders for their squad. Prince also dished out seven assists. In the Euroleague matchup against Familia Schio Prince and Dynamo fared better, winning 63-53, to improve to 2-1 in Euroleague play. Prince had 14 points, four rebounds and four assists in the win.

This week Sugar sparked the Oct. 27th and 29th games with an impressive double-double in both contests. In the first game she scored 16 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists but they were not able to pull out a win and lost by four points, ending their four-game winning streak. On Oct. 29th, Sugar scored 15 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assist to be a leader for the team in a win. Since adding Rodgers to the lineup, Atenienses has gone 5-1, to conclude its regular season schedule with a 13-5 record and secure the No. 2 seed in the BSNF Playoffs.

CAROLYN SWORDS – Sydney Uni Flames

The Sydney Uni Flames are now 3-2, falling to SEQ 89-97 in overtime. Carolyn contributed 25 points and 9 rebounds in 31 minutes for the Sydney Uni Flames. SEQ outrebounded Sydney (48-32) which gave them an advantage over the game as a whole. Carolyn led the team in points and rebounds but they could not secure the win even in an extra period. Sydney is 4-3 overall, and drops to 6th in WNBL standings. They return to action against ninth-place Canberra (0-6) on Nov. 6. Swords is averaging 15.3 ppg and 4.0 rpg in four appearances.

Two more games, and two more lopsided victories for Tina Charles and the Xinjiang Tianshan Deers. Xinjiang is alone at the top of the China-WCBA Group B standings at 6-0 after beating Liaoning 81-60 and Heilongjiang 96-58. Charles went for 25 points (11-19 FG) and 12 rebounds in the win over Kara Braxton and Liaoning, and followed that up with 28 points (10-20 FG), 11 rebounds and five assists in the second win of the week. She is third in the league, averaging 23.3 ppg, and 11.3 rpg.
