EuroLeague Postseason Tips off – Prince, Vaughn Grab Victories

The EuroLeague postseason tipped off last week, with Epiphanny Prince and Kia Vaughn picking up victories in their opening games of the best-of-3 series, while Amanda Zahui B and USK Praha face a must-win against UMMC this week.

In the EuroCup quarterfinals, Bria Hartley and Mersin dropped their first game by 6 points, despite 25 from Hartley, and must make up the difference against Venezia this week.

Hartley and Mersin also find themselves in a 3-way tie for 4th place int he Turkish League standings with both Kiah Stokes (Botas) and Shavonte Zellous (Besiktas).

In France, Rebecca Allen and Lyon now sit in 4th after another win, one that saw Allen score 16 points and hit 4 3-pointers. Lindsay Allen is prepping Dynamo Moscow for the EEWBL semifinals, and had a 16 point, 12 assist game in Russia at the end of February.

Kia Vaughn – Fenerbahce
Kia Vaughn played a huge role in leading Fenerbahce to a pair of most wins last week, averaging 15.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg in a pair of contests. In a EuroLeague quarterfinal win over Sopron Basket, she had a 10-point 10-rebound double-double. Then as Fenerbahce knocked off 1st place Yakin Dogu in the Turkish League, Vaughn posted 20 points and 9 rebounds.

A big game from Rebecca Allen helped propel Lyon to an important 75-67 win over 3rd place Flammes in the French League, as they improved to 9-7 overall and moved into a tie for 4th in the league table. Allen converted four times from long distance to finish with 16 points to go along with 3 boards and a pair of assists. She is averaging 9.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg, and 2.4 apg in France. Lyon looks to keep its winning streak going against last place Roche on March 10.

Sugar Rodgers scored 11 points and swiped away three steals but BLMA suffered an 80-75 setback against Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe and Nantes last week in the French League. BLMA is now 8-8 overall, and a game out of a tie for the 4th position. Rodgers hit a trey for her new squad, with 2 assists in 26 minutes. BLMA returns to action against Hainaut on March 10.

Amanda Zahui B and USK Praha are facing a must-win game against UMMC in the EuroLeague quarterfinals after suffering a 97-70 loss in their first game. Zahui B scored 13 points and connected on 3 shots from downtown for USK Praha. Game two is on March 7. In the Czech League, USK Praha ran its record up to 19-0 after a 93-55 win over Slovanka MB. Zahui B filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Only three regular season games remain in the Czech League, and USK Praha faces Sokol HK on March 10.

Epiphanny Prince and Dynamo Kursk continue to rack up victories, moving one win away from advancing to the EuroLeague semifinals while improving to 16-0 in the Russian League. Prince scored 17 points with a couple of 3-pointers, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists in a 73-61 win over Familia Schio in the 1st game of their EuroLeague quarterfinal series. Game 2 is scheduled for March 7. In the Russian League, Prince played just 22 minutes in a lopsided 94-58 victory over Sparta&K, scoring 11 points with 4 rebounds and 5 assists.

Lindsay Allen and Dynamo Moscow have moved up to 8th place in the Russian League standings, now sitting at 6-11 overall. They split their last two matchups, beating Sparta&K MR 88-82, but falling to MBA last week 80-65. In the win over Sparta, Allen posted an impressive double-double in guiding her team to the win, scoring 16 points with 12 assists. She continues to lead the Russian league averaging 5.4 apg, the only player in the league averaging at least 5 assists per contest. Allen and Dynamo Moscow will face UMMC in Russia this week as they prepare for a EEWBL semifinal matchup with TTT Riga on March 17.

It was a rare week where Bria Hartley and Mersin suffered a pair of setbacks, falling to Venezia in the first leg of their EuroCup quarterfinal series 79-73, and to Istanbul University in the Turkish League 78-72, which dropped them to 12-7 overall and in a 3-way tie for 4th place in the league table. Despite the results, Bria Hartley put up huge numbers in both games for Mersin, scoring 25 points against Venezia and then dropping 30 against Istanbul, a game where she connected on 5 3-pointers. Mersin returns to action for a must-win game to keep its EuroCup season alive against Venezia on March 8, then faces Shavonte Zellous and Besiktas on March 10.

Kia Vaughn helped power a huge week for Fenerbahce which picked up a pair of big wins. In the first game of the EuroLeague quarterfinals, Vaughn posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds as Fenerbahce held off Sopron Basket 60-55. In a showdown with league-leading Yakin Dogu in the Turkish League, Vaughn scored 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting and also hauled in 8 rebounds as Fenerbahce came away with a hard fought 66-65 win. For the week, Vaughn averaged 15.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg. They will face Sopron Basket on March 7 then Hatay in a critical Turkish League matchup on March 11.

Kiah Stokes finished with 12 points in the win, hauling in 8 rebounds with 4 blocked shots. Her league averages now sit at 14.3 ppg, 13.5 rpg, and 2.3 bpg. Botas will face Galatasaray on March 10, followed by Fenerbahce on March 18.
