Allen and Australia Rally for Semifinals Comeback Win over Spain, 72-66

TENERIFE, SPAIN – September 29, 2018 – Rebecca Allen and The Chemist Warehouse Australian Opals have guaranteed themselves a medal at the 2018 FIBA World Cup, rallying back to defeat host Spain, 72-66, in the semifinals.

They will now battle the USA for the gold medal at on Sunday as they seek to replicate their performance from 2006 when they were crowned FIBA World Cup Champions.

After breezing through their first four games of the tournament, the Opals were forced to fight until the final siren against Spain and trailed by eight points at the conclusion of the third quarter.

A 9-1 run by Australia by the fourth quarter’s seventh minute saw the start of a back-and-forth battle by both clubs as each traded buckets until the game’s waning time.

The Opals began to pull away slightly leading by five with 1:45 remaining amid a Spain cold shooting drought. By the 1:27 mark, the Spaniards would score their 65th and 66th point but it would also be their final tallies as Australia went on to score three more to settle the final.

Allen ended with eight points on 50-percent shooting to go along with six rebounds. She had two offensive boards and two assists as well.
