There is a lot to love about center Kia Vaughn and guard Bria Hartley, whom the Liberty acquired from the Washington Mystics in a 3-team trade on Jan. 30. The two native New Yorkers get to play for their hometown team and are well connected to the current Liberty squad, and figure to fit right in with their new team.
So it’s time to take a look at their games, and hear what they will bring to the court with the 2017 season tips off this spring. New York Associate Head Coach Katie Smith brought a scouting report on the newest Libs, check out what she has to say.
“Bria is a combo guard, will definitely bring us experience and scoring at that position. She has a very good understanding of the game and will be well suited to use the pieces on our team. Her ability to shoot the ball with range will mean that defenses will be forced to guard her on the perimeter, and that will remove some of the help from our post players so they can work with less traffic. She has a championship pedigree from UConn, and we want her to bring that mentality to New York, as well as working to establish herself in the WNBA.”
Kia Vaughn is a veteran, athletic, strong front court player that can play either post position. She runs well in transition, is a talented rebounder, and can score on the block. Kia has solid range from 15-to-17 feet on her shot, similar to some of our other posts which will help her fit in seamlessly. She has continued to expand her game every year she has been in the league, and also brings a “New York Toughness” to our team. Kia obviously has a great deal of familiarity with our city and her long history with some of our players will make her a natural fit.”
