Liberty Players Return to the Court Following Break – International Update 2-21

Liberty players are coming off a mid-February break and found a lot of success as they prepare to enter the home stretch of the domestic league schedule and continue with the EuroLeague and EuroCup postseasons.

All three Liberty players competing in the EuroLeague regular season advanced to the quarterfinals, which tip off next week. Epiphanny Prince (Dynamo Kursk), Kia Vaughn (Fenerbahce) and Amanda Zahui B (USK Praha) will all play in a quarterfinal series that starts at the end of the month.

In the EuroCup, Bria Hartley and Mersin are still alive after yet another series sweep. Their quarterfinal series against Venezia begins on March 1. In Russia, Lindsay Allen and Dynamo Moscow have had some trouble in their domestic league, but are in the Eastern European Basketball League semifinals after back-to-back wins in the quarterfinal round.

LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bria Hartley – Mersin
Bria Hartley is once again the Liberty International Player of the Week after posting big numbers for Mersin in a pair of Turkish League wins. She scored 30 points and nailed 5 3-pointers in a win over Adana and followed that up with 16 points and 3 steals against Bornova. Hartley is leading the Turkish League in scoring at 20.2 ppg.

Rebecca Allen and Lyon have gone 1-1 in a pair of games played in February, keeping pace in a tie for 5th place in the league standings. Against Nantes, Allen scored 10 points and had 3 rebounds and 3 assists, but Lyon suffered a close 68-64 setback. Two weeks later in a double-digit win over Landes, Allen scored just 4 points but finished with 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. She is averaging 9.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 2.5 apg, and 1.7 spg so far this season. Her team is back in action on March 3 when they face Flammes.

BLMA has picked up a pair of wins in February to improve to 8-7, moving above .500 and into a 3-way tie for 5th place in the French League standings. Rodgers has been a threat from deep for her new team, hitting a pair of triples in a 93-88 win over Tarbes, and connecting from downtown three times in an 81-68 victory over Mondeville. She is averaging 9.3 ppg and shooting .355 from downtown for her new squad. She is back in action against Nantes on March 3.

Amanda Zahui B and USK Praha ended EuroLeague group play on a high note, picking up a 75-71 win over Castors Brai to clinch 3rd place in Group A, and set up a quarterfinal series with UMMC that tips off on Feb. 28. In that win, Zahui B starred, posting 28 points to go along with 11 rebounds and 3 assists. She finished group action averaging 17.6 ppg and 8.5 rpg, with USK Praha going 8-6 overall. In the Czech League, Praha came out of a break to secure a 94-73 win over BLK Praha. Zahui B scored 26 points and nailed 3 3-pointers in the win.

Epiphanny Prince and Dynamo Kursk remained undefeated to close out the EuroLeague group stage, securing a 14-0 record with a 83-73 win over CCC Polkowice. Prince scored 11 points with 7 rebounds and 3 assists in the victory. Kursk will now face Familia Schio in a quarterfinal series tipping off next week. In the Russian League, Kursk improved to 13-0, coming off the break to pick up an 84-74 victory over Nadezhda Orenburg. Prince knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the win, also dishing out 5 assists. Kursk will play a pair of Russian League games this week, Inventa on Feb. 21, and Enisey on Feb. 25.

Lindsay Allen continues to excel for Dynamo Moscow, leading her squad into the EEWBL semifinal round with a sweep over Al Riyadi. In the clinching 69-64 victory, Allen scored 14 points with 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Dynamo Moscow lost in Russian League action to Inventa, 82-68, but Allen turned in another impressive stat line, posting a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. She continues to lead the Russian League averaging 4.6 apg. Dynamo Moscow will return to action against Enisey on Feb. 21.

Bria Hartley and Mersin picked up right where they left off coming off a two-week hiatus in mid February, picking up yet another victory to improve to 12-6 overall in the Turkish League and maintain a hold on the 4th spot in the league standings. Hartley posted 16 points with a pair of 3-pointers in a 104-64 blowout win over Bornova last week. She is now the Turkish League’s leading scorer, averaging 20.2 ppg, and also ranks 8th with 1.7 spg. Hartley and Mersin will tip off their EuroCup quarterfinal series against Venezia on March 1.

Fenerbahce is 1-1 over its last two Turkish League games, and is now sitting in 3rd place overall with a 15-3 league record. Kia Vaughn scored 6 points with 5 rebounds in 75-63 win over Istanbul Univ. at the beginning of the month, and posted 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting against Besiktas this week, but it was not enough to lead her team to a win as they suffered a 71-62 loss. Fenerbahce opens EuroLeague quarterfinals against Sopron Basket on Feb. 28 and faces league-leading Yakin Dogu on March 4.

Kiah Stokes and Botas are still on a roll, rattling off two more wins in February to improve to 11-7 overall and keep pace with Besiktas for 5th in the Turkish League standings. Stokes had a double-double in each of her last two games, posting 15 points and 15 rebounds in a win over Cukurova, and 16 points with 11 boards in just 14 minutes of action as Botas easily defeated Canik Beledi 67-51. Stokes and Botas will have this week off before facing Abdullah Gul on March 3.

Shavonte Zellous and Besiktas defeated Galatasaray and toppled Fenerbahce over the past two weeks in the Turkish League, improving to 11-7 overall and remaining in 5th place in the league standings. After scoring just 9 points in the 81-80 win over Galatasaray, Zellous posted 19 points in the victory over Fenerbahce. She is averaging 15.0 ppg, 6.1 rpg, and 3.5 apg for Besiktas. She returns to action against OGM Orman on March 3.
