Liberty International Update 12-6

A lot of strong performances and big wins for New York Liberty players abroad last week as all teams returned to the normal schedule of juggling league play with international tournaments.

For Carolyn Swords and Rebecca Allen, that meant competing in the Eastern European Women’s Basketball League in addition to playing in Polish and Slovakian League games as well. Allen actually played 3 games last week, as Good Angels is also in EuroCup Group play, but she helped Kolsice post a 3-0 record.

Swords found a great deal of success for Basket 90 Gdynia, as their two wins in the EEBWL led to her being named the league’s Player of the Week for Round 4. She averaged 24.5 ppg in two victories and combined to shoot 19-of-24 from the field.

Epiphanny Prince and Tanisha Wright also helped lead their squads to a pair of wins last week, remaining unbeaten in international competition as well. Prince and Dynamo Kursk won EuroLeague and Russian games, while Wright and Kayseri improved to 4-0 in EuroCup group action and stayed in 3rd place in the Turkish League with a win over Hatay where she scored 16 points with 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

The newly formed duo of Kiah Stokes and Shavonte Zellous found more success as well, picking up their second win in a row since uniting just after Thanksgiving.

LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kiah Stokes – Besiktas
It was just her second game of the season, but Kiah Stokes made a huge contribution for her new club team Besiktas, which picked up its 2nd-straight victory, edging Osmaniye 80-74. Stokes turned in an impressive double-double, scoring 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting with an incredible 20 rebounds. Through two games Stokes is averaging 16.0 boards per game.

Tina Charles continues to pour it in for Sichuan as she helped her WCBA squad post a 1-1 record last week, remaining in 4th place in the Group B standings with three games remaining in stage 2 of the regular season. In a narrow 84-79setback against Heilongjiang (Crystal Langhorne), Charles finished with 37 points and 12 rebounds, knocking down all three of her 3-point field goal attempts. Two days later, Charles scored 36 points with 24 rebounds to power her squad to a 70-69 victory over Glory Johnson and Xinjiang. Charles is averaging 33.8 points and 15.0 rebounds per game, leading the league in both categories.

It was a busy week for Rebecca Allen and Good Angels as they played three games, one each in EuroCup, the Slovakian League and the Eastern European Women’s Basketball League, but they won all three games. Starting with a win over Miskolc in the EuroCup, where Allen finished with 11 points, they then beat Slovan 106-28 in Slovakian League play, where Allen scored 10 points, nailing all three of her 3-point attempts. The next day, Good Angels edged TTT Riga 70-68, as Allen finished with 18 points, knocking down 3 more 3-pointers, to help her team remain unbeaten in the EEWBL. Allen is averaging 15.8 ppg in Slovakia, ranking 4th in the league, and is also shooting .654 from 3-point range.

Carolyn Swords experienced the Eastern European Women’s Basketball League for the 1st time and turned in a pair of huge performances for Basket Gdynia, which led to her being named the EuroBasket EEWBL Player of the Week for Round 4. In a win over Astana on Saturday, Swords scored 22 points while shooting 9-of-9 from the field. The next day she followed that up with a huge 27 point performances (10-of-15 FG) to help Basket 90 edge Dynamo Moscow and improve to 4-1 in the EEWBL standings, trailing just Rebecca Allen and Good Angels. For the week Swords averaged 24.5 ppg and shot .792 from the field. She and Basket 90 will play a pair of Polish League games coming up, starting with a contest against Energa on Dec. 10.

Epiphanny Prince continues to play the role of facilitator for Dynamo Kursk and is to the benefit of the team as they picked up a couple more wins this week. In a EuroLeague win over Fenerbahce (Allie Quigley, Shekinna Stricklen, Jantel Lavender), Prince finished with 4 assists and a steal in 29 minutes. Kursk also maintained its hold on 2nd place in the competitive top half of the Russian League standings, beating Enisey 88-59, in a game in which Prince dished out 9 dimes, also scoring 4 points with 3 rebounds. For the year she is averaging 3.1 assists per game in Russia and 3.5 per contest in EuroLeague action. Prince and Dynamo Kursk face USK Praha in a key EuroLeague group game on Dec. 7.

Amanda Zahui B and Nadezhda Orenburg remained unbeaten in EuroLeague Group play but did suffer their 2nd loss of the Russian season last week. In a 65-57 win over UNIQA Eurol., Zahui B finished with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocked shots as Orenburg improved to 4-0 in the tournament, setting up a meeting with the other unbeaten team in their group, USK Praha, next week. In the Russian Premier League, Orenburg lost to UMMC (Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, Emma Meesseman) 67-53, as Zahui B finished with 8 points. She ranks 7th in the league averaging 13.1 ppg and is 8th in EuroLeague averaging 8.5 rpg.

Another strong week for Tanisha Wright and Abdullah Gul as she helped the team post a 2-0 week with victories in EuroCup and Turkish League action. Wright filled out the stat sheet with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals, in an all around effort that helped that helped guide Kayseri to an 84-62 victory over PINKK-Pecsi in the EuroCup, which helped them remain unbeaten in group play. Against Hatay (Courtney Paris) in Turkey, Wright finished with 16 points, tallying 3 rebounds, and 3 assists, in a very close 74-73 win. Her 6.0 apg in Turkey rank 6th in the league, and she is averaging double figures scoring in both EuroCup (15.5 ppg) and Turkey (14.3 ppg).

In her best performance of the season so far in Turkey, Shavonte Zellous led Besiktas to its 2nd-straight win, an 80-74 victory over Osmaniye (Riquna Williams). Zellous finished with 19 points, shooting 6-of-16 from the field with a 3-pointer, in addition to finishing with 3 assists. She is now averaging 13.5 ppg in 6 appearances, with 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per contest. Besiktas is back next weekend against Mersin MBK.

Two wins in a row for Besiktas since Kiah Stokes was brought into the fold, and she enjoyed a monster performance in just her second game in the Turkish League. Besiktas beat Osmaniye (Riquna Williams) 80-74, and Stokes finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field while hauling in an incredible 20 rebounds, 4 on the offensive end. Through 2 games she is averaging 8.0 points and 16.0 rebounds per game. Stokes and Besiktas as back in action against Mersin MBK on Dec. 10.
