Liberty International Update 11-8

A break is in sight for most of the New York Liberty players currently competing across Europe, with most leagues taking a week off in the middle of November, but before that comes more domestic and international competition.

There were a number of strong performances across the board this week, particularly in the big international tournaments where Amanda Zahui B and Tanisha Wright continued to shine.

For Zahui B, she had her second double-double in as many EuroLeague games, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Villenueve for Nadezhda Orenburg. Wright also posted big numbers, scoring 16 points for Abdullah Gul in a EuroCup group stage win over PEAC-Pecs, and in Turkish play, she posted 13 points and 15 assists in a loss to Mersin.

Rebecca Allen continues to look comfortable in Slovakia, guiding Good Angels to another league win behind a 20 point performances, and Carolyn Swords’ Basket 90 Gdynia picked up its first win of the season. Renee Mongomery has signed with the team, and her addition along with 16 points and 15 rebounds from Swords resulted in a 71-59 victory over MKK Siedlce.

Coming up this week, EuroLeague and EuroCup action continues before a brief hiatus until later in the month. The game of the week for Liberty fans is undoubtedly Zahui B and Nadezhda Orenburg against Brittany Boyd and CCC Polkowice on Wednesday.

LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tanisha Wright – Abdullah Gul
Although it came during a disappointing result against Mersin, a 75-74 setback, Tanisha Wright turned in one of the most impressive stat lines for a Liberty player abroad so far this year, scoring 13 points with 15 assists in the game. She also scored in double figures in Abdullah Gul’s EuroCup win over PEAC-Pesc, finishing with 16 points. In 2 games she averaged 14.5 points and 3.0 assists per game.

Rebecca Allen and Good Angels went 1-1 last week, falling to 1-1 in EuroCup Group play while maintaining a second-place standing in the Slovakian league with another lopsided victory. In that Extraliga victory, a 105-51 win over Samorin, Allen enjoyed another efficient performance, scoring 20 points in just 14 minutes with a pair of makes from 3-point range. Averaging 15.9 ppg in the Slovakian Leauge, Allen ranks fourth in scoring and is also 2nd in blocks (1.9 bpg) and 8th in steals (2.3 spg). In EuroCup action, Allen and Good Angels lost to a strong Turkish squad Yakin Dogu, featuring Essence Carson, Elin Eldebrink, and Quanitra Hollingsworth. Allen had 9 points with 6 rebounds. The schedule remains a EuroCup group game paired with league action for Good Angels again this week.

A big double-double from Carolyn Swords helped Basket Gdynia pick up its first victory of the season, a 71-59 win over MKK Siedlce over the weekend. Swords was an impressive 8-of-10 from the field to score 16 points, in addition to hauling in a game-high 15 rebounds, helping her team establish a 49-33 edge on the glass. Renee Montgomery also recently signed with Gdynia, scoring 14 points in her team debut. Swords is now leading the Polish league averaging 12.7 rebounds per game. She and Gdynia are back in action TS Ostrovia on Nov. 12, before getting a week off between games.

Brittany Boyd and CCC Polkowice suffered a pair of disappointing losses last week, falling to 0-2 in EuroLeague Group Play with a 65-60 defeat to Bourges from the French league, and they fell to 4-3 in the Polish league with a 60-51 loss to AZS UMCS. In the EuroLeague game, Boyd scoring 7 points with 3 rebounds and 7 assists in 31 minutes, also knocking down a 3-pointer. She filled out the stat sheet with 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists against AZS, but it was not enough for Polkowice to earn the win. Boyd is averaging 9.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game in Polish league play. CCC Polkowice has a Euroleague meeting with Amanda Zahui B and Nadezhda Orenburg on Nov. 9.

Dynamo Kursk went 2-0 last week to remain unbeaten on the season in both the Russian Premier League and EuroLeague Group Play. Kursk earned a 73-67 victory over a tough Mersin squad (Tiffany Hayes, Marissa Coleman) in EuroLeague action, with Prince starting and playing the role of facilitator, racking up a team-high 5 assists. Dynamo Kursk also eased past Dynamo NR, 84-57 in the Russian League, a game in which Prince came off the bench to score 9 points with a 3-pointer in 16 minutes of action. For the year, she is averaging 8.5 ppg in the Russian league and 7.5 ppg in EuroLeague action. Dynamo Kursk will play Lattes Montpellier in a EuroLeague match on Nov. 9 and then will be off until Nov. 27.

Nadezhda Orenburg and Amanda Zahui B keep on rolling, posting two more victories this week. Once again, Zahui B was critical to helping Orenburg capture a EuroLeague win, as she posted another double-double, this time scoring 15 points (7-13 FG) with 11 rebounds in a 58-48 win over Villenueve on Nov. 2. She is averaging 16.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game in her first two EuroLeague contests. Over the weekend, Zahui B came off the bench to contribute 8 points, 5 boards, and 3 assists in a competitive game against Dynamo M, a 76-71 win, that allowed Orenburg, to improve to 6-1 in the Russian League. Up next is a EuroLeague group matchup with Brittany Boyd and CCC Polkowice on Nov. 9.

It was another pair of stellar performances for Tanisha Wright this week, as she helped Abdullah Gul post a 1-1 record, including a second victory in EuroCup Group Play. Over two games, Wright averaged 14.5 points, 7.5 assists, and 3.0 steals per game. In the 69-62 win over PEAC-Pesc in EuroCup action, Wright had 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from 2-point range, with 3 steals. Three days later, Abdullah Gul suffered a one-point loss to Mersin BSB, 75-74, where Wright posted a double-double, scoring 13 points with an incredible 15 assists, and 3 more steals. She is averaging 16.3 points and 9.3 assists per game in the Turkish League, and 17.5 ppg in two EuroCup group matches so far. Up next, Abdullah will face MBA in EuroCup action on Nov. 10, followed by Adana ASKA in Turkey on Nov. 12.

Shavonte Zellous turned in a solid performance for Besiktas against Adana ASKI (Alex Bentley, Avery Warley-Talbert, Alysha Clark), but it was not enough to help lead them to their first win of the year, as they fell 73-62. Zellous scored 9 points, shooting 3-of-8 from the field, with 3 rebounds, and a pair of assists. Through the first three games of the season, Zellous is averaging 11.7 points per game with 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest. Besiktas returns to action on Nov. 12 when it faces 1st place Fenerbahce.
