Liberty International Update 11-21

As European leagues all took a break to allow national teams to train and compete in the final two rounds of the 2017 FIBA European Women Basketball Championship (Eurobasket) qualifiers, most Liberty players enjoyed some much needed time off, although there were two exceptions.

Shavonte Zellous, who competes internationally for Croatia, is suiting up for their national team in their final two qualifying round games, and Tina Charles made her debut with the Sichuan Whale in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA), after taking the first stage of competition off in order to rest after a 2016 that saw her compete for the Liberty and the gold medal winning United States Olympic Team.

Epiphanny Prince is a member of the Russian national team, but did not compete for Russia in their qualifier as they have one of the coveted 16 spots for the Eurobasket Women’s tournament locked up.

Zellous was solid for Croatia in an 86-45 blowout win over Estonia, finishing with 8 points on 4-of-5 shooting with 3 rebounds in just 11 minutes of action. Croatia will play its final qualifier against France on Wednesday afternoon. The 2017 FIBA Women’s Championship will be contested from June 16-27, 2017, in the Czech Republic.

Charles debuted in the second game of the Second Stage of competition for the WCBA, and immediately faced a big matchup against Candace Parker and Zinjiang. Charles was dominant, finishing with 28 points and 14 rebounds, but her team suffered a 93-73 loss.

This week will see Charles competed 3 times in 7 days for Sichuan, while the Eurobasket qualifying stage wraps up on Wednesday. All of the European leagues returns to competition this weekend, as players return from national team duties.
