Liberty International Update 10-25

The highly competitive Turkish KBSL League officially tipped off over the weekend, as three more Liberty players began their international play with Sugar Rodgers, Tanisha Wright, and Shavonte Zellous all currently competing in Turkey.

Each had impressive debuts for their new teams, but it was Rodgers who posted the most impressive numbers, approaching a triple-double with 25 points, 8 assists, and 7 rebounds, in a win for Osmaniye. Tanisha Wright also turned in a 20-point performance, finishing with 21 points and 12 rebounds while playing 40 minutes in a win over Samsun.

In Slovakia, Rebecca Allen continued her strong play, leading to her being named the Eurobasket.com Player of the Week for Slovakia, where she ranks 6th in the league averaging 13.8 ppg for second place Good Angels Kolsice.

Coming up for Liberty players abroad, group play for Euroleague and EuroCup commences on Wednesday, while Wright and Zellous will see their teams matchup in Turkish League action next weekend.

Rebecca Allen tied for the team lead in scoring with 19 points on an impressive 6-of-8 shooting from the field as Good Angels routed UKF Nitra 121-37 in Slovakian League play. For her strong efforts in a pair of wins last week, Allen was tabbed as the Eurobasket.com Player of the Week for Slovakia. She is currently second in the team in scoring with 13.8 ppg, and shooting .538 from the field. For the year, she ranks 6th in the league in scoring, 9th in steals (2.2 spg) and 2nd in blocked shots (2.0 bpg). Up next for Allen and Good Angels, the first EuroCup game of the season comes Wednesday against Miskolc.

Carolyn Swords played her second league game for Basket 90 Gdynia and was dominant, but unable to lead her team to a win as they fell to Artego 71-59. Swords posted a double-double, finishing with 17 points and 18 rebounds, six on the offensive end, while shooting 7-of-13 from the field. Through two games she is averaging 12.5 points and 15.5 rebounds per game.

Epiphanny Prince and Dynamo Kursk improved to 5-0 in the Russian Premier League with a 95-61 victory over Chevakata last week. Prince filled out the stat sheet with 8 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals in just 21 minutes of the big win. She is averaging 10.5 points, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game so far in the Russian league, ranking 7th overall in assists and 8th in steals. Prince and Dynamo tip off EuroLeague group action on Wednesday, as they face Wisla-Can Pack from the Polish league.

Amanda Zahui B and Nadezhda Orenburg had the week off as they prepare to begin Euroleague action on Wednesday, but she has gotten off to a red hot start in the Russian League. Her squad is 4-1 and Zahui B currently ranks 6th in the league in scoring, averaging 15.8 ppg, thanks to an efficient .658 field goal percentage. She leads her squad in scoring and rebounding (5.5 rpg). Zahui B and Orenburg will face Hatay from the Turkish League with Euroleague play tips off Wednesday.

Nearly a triple-double for Sugar Rodgers in her first game suiting up for Osmaniye in Turkey last week, as she helped her squad pick up a win in its season opener, 84-71 over Gime Univ. Liberty fans are very familiar with the kind of 3-point shooting display Rodgers put up, going 6-of-9 from downtown to finish with 25 points in addition to 7 rebounds and 8 assists. Rodgers and Osmaniye return to action against Botas this week.

Tanisha Wright was instrumental in leading Abdullah Gul to a 72-68 victory over Samsun in its Turkish League opener last week. Wright played all 40 minutes in her season debut, finishing with a team-high 21 points to go along with 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Wright was 7-21 from the field, but got to the line 9 times, where she shot 7-of-9. Wright and Abdullah Gul tip off EuroCup group play against PINKK-Pecsi from Hungary on Wednesday.

Shavonte Zellous and Besiktas Instanbul lost its KBSL opener to Mersin BSB, 84-74, on Saturday. Zellous was one of three players to score in double figures for Besiktas, finishing with 14 points while enjoying an aggressive offensive game, where she shot 6-of-16, hauling in 8 rebounds with a team-high 5 assists. Mersin was led by Marissa Coleman, who scored a league-high 26 points in the first weekend of compeition for 2017. Zellous and Besiktas will face Tanisha Wright and Abdullah Gul on Oct. 29.
