International Update Dec. 7

The biggest match up this past week was between two New York Liberty players as Essence Carson and Avery Warley-Talbert squared off in Turkey. Both teams needed this win, but Carson and Canik BLD were able to pull out the 78-72 victory over the weekend. Warley-Talbert went for a double-double, scoring 14 points with 12 rebounds for Botas, but Carson’s 13 points helped pace Canik to the win while Botas fell to 1-6 in the KBSL.

Tina Charles and Xinjiang continue to thrive in the WCBA in China, but after an uncharacteristic five-point game from Charles, although she did still haul in 15 rebounds, Xinjiang fell to Sylvia Fowles and Beijing 73-71. Carolyn Swords continues to post reliable numbers in Australia as the Sydney Uni Flames went 1-1 last week and at 8-4 sit third in the league table. Kiah Stokes also went 1-1 with the Samsung Blue Minx in South Korea, seeing her scoring numbers take a bit of a dip last week when she averaged four points and two rebounds.

What a match up this past week between Essence Carson and her New York Liberty teammate Avery Warley-Talbert! Essence and Canik were able to pull through with a victory, she contributed 13 points and 2 assist to her team’s win. She went 5-5 from the free throw line, she is shooting 88.2% from the line this season. Canik Bld outrebounded Botas 37-28 to help them to obtain the victory.

CAROLYN SWORDS – Sydney Uni Flames

The Flames lost to the Adelaide Lightning who were ranked 8th in WNBL, in somewhat of an upset in the WNBL, with Carolyn Swords contributing seven points and three rebounds. Swords and Sydney Uni Flames bounced back to out-rebound theCanberra Capitals 34-23 in an 82-76 win, which included 26 on the defensive end, and they maintained the lead for most of the game; Swords chipped in eight points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes. Sydney remains in third place with a record of 8-4 and they are behind Perth as they are leading in the WNBL standings. In the next round they will face 4th place Townsville Fire in a critical matchup.

TINA CHARLES #31- Xinjiang

Xinjiang added another victory to their record on December 1st, they were able to beat the fifth ranked Sheyang Gold Lions 97-92. Tina Charles continues to step up to lead her team as she contributed 32 points and 4 rebounds. They were able to maintain first place after that game, but were upset on December 5th where Beijing beat Xinjiang 73-71. Sylvia Fowles was able to lead Beijing to a win, scoring 26 points and 17 rebounds. Charles contributed 5 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Charles and Xinjiang will will look ahead to the the next round where they will play Guangdong Dolphins.

Rebecca Allen #9- SEQ

On December 6th, SEQ who is ranked 6th in the WNBL, lost to second ranked Bendigo Spirit 88-97 and Rebecca Allen was limited to three points, two assists and two rebounds. SEQ trailed for majority of the game and was never able to get over the hump after a slow start. The Bendigo Spirit had a solid shooting night from behind the arc with 61.1%. As a team they were able to share the ball and have 22 assist combined. SEQ has lost four in a row and has been locked in the sixth spot.

Kiah Stokes #41- Samsung Life Blue Minx

Fourth-ranked Bichumi was very close to capturing win against first ranked Woori Hansae, but they were not able to prevail in a narrow 66-64 defeat. Kiah Stokes played just six minutes off the bench, scoring two points with two rebounds and a block. Two days later Samsung beat Winnus 64-57. Again Stokes came off the bench, but was featured more on the offensive end, scorings six points while hitting both of her field goal attempts, in addition to grabbing a pair of rebounds with two blocked shots.

Avery Warley-Talbert #23- Botas

Avery Warley-Talbert matched up with her New York Liberty teammate Essence Carson on December 5th! Botas was not been able to capture its second win but Warley-Talbert continues to step up. She contributed a double-double scoring 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. She is currently shooting at a 60.6 percent from the field and averaging just shy of a double-double in seven games with 14.6 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest.
