International Update Dec. 21

Although the holiday season is in full swing here in the states, the New York Liberty players were putting in hard work on the court as international competition continued to heat up and Liberty players turned in strong performances across the board, from Rebecca Allen, who broke out with 16 points in her last game, to Kiah Stokes, who averaged 19.0 ppg and 23.0 rpg in two starts in South Korea.

Avery Warley-Talbert and Botas won again! She dominated from the second week in a row with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Stokes stepped up in a major way but her team was not able to capture the victory, she went back to back with a double-double, in the first game she had 17 points and 19 rebounds and the next game she had 21 points and 27 rebounds.

Most of the teams will continue competition through the holidays, with Tina Charles and Xinjiang moving into the WCBA Playoffs as Round Two concluded and the semifinals get started up on Dec. 22.


ESSENCE CARSON #32 – Canik BLD

Essence Carson impressed this past week as went 8-12 from the field to help Canik capture its fourth a win. She contributed 16 points and two rebounds in 31 minutes. Canik Bld is now in eighth place in KBSL, while Carson is averaging 9.4 points per game.

CAROLYN SWORDS – Sydney Uni Flames

In the fight for second place, Sydney pulled through with a victory and Carolyn Swords contributed 9 points and 10 rebounds. The game was a nail biter with the score was tied at the half, but Bendigo Spirit could not keep up in the last two quarters. The Sydney Uni Flames were able to use this victory as to build momentum for another key matchup on the very next day when they faced Melbourne in Round 14. The Uni Flames trailed for majority of the game but they were able to gain the lead and takeover, Swords was able to chip in 6 points and 2 rebounds in 17 minutes of play. Sydney will have a break until the next round of games begin. Swords has been impressive with 13.3 ppg to go along with 6.4 rpg for Sydney.

TINA CHARLES #31- Xinjiang

Xinjiang closed out WCBA Stage Two action with a dominating 82-66 win over Shenyang to secure the No. 3 seed for the WCBA Playoffs, which begin Tuesday. Tina Charles finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three assists in the win. Xinjiang went 7-3 during Stage Two action and will matchup with Sylvia Fowles and Beijing in the semifinal round of the WCBA Playoffs.

The game versus Townsville was mainly controlled by SEQ which cruised to a 20-point win, 95-75. It was a breakout performance for Rebecca Allen, who stepped up for the SEQ team contributing 16 points on 5-8 FG while shooting 2-3 from the behind the arc. Five SEQ players scored in double figures, to help secure the victory. Newly promoted SEQ maintains sixth place with a 7-7 record, in the next round they will face higher ranked Dandenong Rangers for the start of the new year.

Kiah Stokes enjoyed a huge week for the Bichumi Samsung Life Blue Minx, but it was not enough to lead her team to a win in either matchup. IN two games, Stokes was dominant, averaging 19.0 ppg and 23.0 rpg. In a very low scoring game against Woori Hansae, Stokes finished with 17 points and 19 rebounds in 40 minutes of action. In the next round of games, Stokes put the team on her back again, leading with 21 points and 27 rebounds for the game, but again it was not enough to get the victory as Bichumi drops to fifth place in the six-team league at 6-9 overall.

Avery Warley-Talbert #23- Botas

Avery Warley-Talbert and Botas returned to action and were able to pick up a second-straight victory, upsetting Jewell Loyd and Galatasaray 73-70! Warley-Talbert dominated for the second week in a row, posting a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. She went 7-9 from the field, and for the season is shooting at 60.0 percent and averaging just shy of a double-double with 15.1 ppg and 9.7 rpg. Botas was able to move up in standings to 10th place, now sitting at 3-6 overall.
