Hartley and Mersin Advance to EuroCup Quarterfinals – International Update 1/16

Bria Hartley and Mersin delivered the biggest win of the week for Liberty players abroad, as they held off TTT Riga in the EuroCup Round of 16 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals, which top off on Jan. 25.

In EuroLeague action, Epiphanny Prince and Dynamo Kursk maintained their unblemished record, defeating Amanda Zahui B and USK Praha, while Kia Vaughn and Fenerbahce defeated UMMC in their EuroLeague contest, keeping pace for 1st place in Group B.

Lindsay Allen helped Dynamo Moscow get three victories, including a pair of wins in the EEWBL group stage thanks in part to a 21-point performance.

The most dominant stat line of the week belonged to Kiah Stokes who had 22 points and 15 rebounds for Botas in a 4-point loss to 1st place Yakin Dogu in Turkey.

Bria Hartley – Mersin
It was a big week for Bria Hartley and Mersin, advancing to the EuroCup quarterfinals while moving into a tie for 4th place in the Turkish League standings. Hartley scored 12 points in the clinching win over TTT Riga in EuroCup, then dropped 27 points with 3 3-pointers as Mersin toppled Galatasary in Turkey.

Amanda Zahui B and USK Praha went 1-1 last week, falling to Epiphanny Prince and unbeaten Dynamo Kursk, 88-56 in EuroLeague action, while easily defeating SBS Ostrava 125-43 in the Czech League to improve to 15-0 and on top of the league table. Zahui B scored 16 points against Dynamo Kursk, and tallied 9 points with 5 rebounds over just 22 minutes in the Czech League game. USK Praha will face Villenueve this week in EuroLeague action with just 3 group stage games remaining, and Loko Trutnov next weekend in the Czech League.

Dynamo Kursk remained unbeaten this season by picking up wins over USK Praha in EuroLeague action and Kazanochka in the Russian League. Epiphanny Prince saw limited action in both games. Against USK Praha, she scored 8 points by buying a pair of 3-pointes, and in the Russian League victory she logged just 19 minutes, hauling in four rebounds. Up next for Dynamo Kursk is a matchup with Bourges in EuroLeague, who currently sits 3rd in Group A, and Dynamo NR in the Russian League.

Lindsay Allen and Dynamo Moscow won three games last week, improving to 3-8 in the Russian League while moving above .500 in EEWBL group play with a pair of victories, now sitting at 4-3. Lindsay Allen poured in 21 points with 5 assists in an 81-68 win over Tsmoki-Minsk in EEWBL action over the weekend, and followed that up with 10 points and 5 more assists in a win over Sirenos. Allen is averaging 9.9 ppg and 5.1 apg in the EEWBL. Dynamo Moscow is scheduled to resume Russian League play against Nadezhda Orenburg on Jan. 28.

It was one of the best weeks of the season for Bria Hartley as she helped lead Mersin to a pair of wins, including the biggest of the year, a 63-62 over TTT Riga to secure a berth into the EuroCup Quarterfinals, which tip off later this morning. Already holding a sizable lead in aggregate points, Hartley scored 12 points with 5 rebounds and 3 assists in a road win for Mersin over Riga. They will now face Flammes in the 1st leg of their EuroCup quarterfinal series starting on Jan. 25. In the Turkish League, Hartley poured in 27 points, burying 3 3-pointers with 4 assists in an 87-77 win over Galatasaray. Mersin, which is now tied for 4th in the Turkish League table faces league-leading Fenerbahce this weekend.

Fenerbahce continued its positive momentum, picking up a huge win over UMMC in EuroLeague to maintain a tie with Turkish League rival Yakin Dogu for 1st place in Group B. Kia Vaughn scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting to help Fenberbahce defeat UMMC 80-77. Over the weekend, her squad edged OGM Orman 57-54, with Vaughn hauling in 14 rebounds with a pair of steals. In the upcoming week, Vaughn and Fenerbahce will face Avenida in EuroLeague before facing Bria Hartley and Mersin in the Turkish League.

Despite a dominant performance from Kiah Stokes, Botas suffered a narrow 85-81 setback to first place Yakin Dogu over the weekend. Stokes was impressive, scoring 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting while also hauling in 15 boards for the double-double to go along with 3 blocked shots. With season averages of 14.7 ppg, 14.6 rpg, and 2.6 bpg, she ranks 2nd in Turkey in rebounding and 1st in blocked shots. Despite the loss, Botas is still in a tie for 4th in the league. Their tough stretch continues as they face 3rd ranked Hatay over the weekend.

Shavonte Zellous and Besiktas fell to Cukurova 62-57 last weekend, dropping to 7-7 in the Turkish League, in a tie for 8th place in the standings. Zellous, who was battling an illness last week, scored six points while still securing 11 rebounds in 31 minutes on the court. She is averaging 16.0 ppg, 6.7 rpg, and 3.1 apg for Besiktas this season. Zellous will be back in action against Canik Beledi next week.
