Former Liberty Assistant Norm Ellenberger Passes Away at Age 83

The New York Liberty is saddened to learn of the death of former assistant coach Norm Ellenberger, who passed away on Saturday, Nov. 14, at his home in Watersmeet, Mich.; He was 83 years old.

Ellenberger was an assistant coach on John Whisenant’s staff during the Liberty’s 2012 season, helping guide the team to a 15-19 overall record and the No. 4 seed in the WNBA Eastern Conference Playoffs.

He enjoyed a storied coaching career that spanned seven decades, with stints in the WNBA, NBA, NCAA and high school.

Ellenberger was the head coach of the University of New Mexico from 1972-79, guiding the Lobos to a pair of Western Athletic Conference titles and a berth into the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1974.

He also served as an assistant coach with UTEP (1986-90), Indiana University (1990-00) and the Chicago Bulls (2000-03).
