Exciting Week for the Liberty Before the Break – International Update 11-7

All eight Liberty players are on bye during the upcoming week, but many turned in some impressive performances last week before a much needed breather before domestic and international competition resumes.

The marquee matchup of the week came as Epiphanny Prince and Dynamo Kursk faced Amanda Zahui B and USK Praha in EuroLeague, with Prince’s team coming out on top thanks to 19 points from the Liberty guard.

Kia Vaughn and Fenerbahce also pulled off a big EuroLeague victory, toppling UMMC 73-71.

In EuroCup play, the most exciting game of the week came for Bria Hartley and Mersin, albeit in a losing effort, as they fell 89-87 in double overtime at Good Angels, Hartley scored 21 points on 5 3-pointers to pace Mersin.

Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe scored 9 points with 10 boards, but Nantes fell to Belfius Namur 77-60 in EuroCup.

Kiah Stokes helped Botas win its 3rd in a row, posting 10 points and 20 rebounds in a victory over Canik in the Turkish League.

Epiphanny Prince – Dynamo Kursk
Prince starred in two wins for Dynamo Kursk last week, averaging 17.5 ppg in the pair of victories while shooting 14-of-17 from the field. She had 19 points and 3 3-pointers in a key win over USK Praha in EuroLeague, then efficiently put in 15 points in just 16 minutes, shooting 6-of-7, as Dynamo Kursk eased past Enisey in the Russian League.

It was a must needed win this week for Rebecca Allen and Lyon as they cruised past Roche 83-59 to improve to 2-4 in the French League. Allen filled up the stat sheet, scoring 9 points with 6 rebounds and 3 assists, hitting a 3-pointer as well, while logging 24 minutes of action. Her team will be off this week before returning to action against Nice on Nov. 19.

It was a disappointing week for Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe and Nantes, although she continues to dominate the French League, leading all players in scoring (17.5 ppg) and rebounding (13.7), and is the only player averaging double-digit boards in the league. Despite her strong play (29 points, 15 rebounds), Nantes fell to Landes in the French League (68-65) and also feel to 1-3 in EuroCup Group J after a 77-60 setback against Belfius Namur; Raincock-Ekunwe had 9 points and 10 boards in that game. Nantes will be off for two weeks before returning to action against Flammes on Nov. 9, and has two critical EuroCup group games remaining.

Two European powerhouse teams met up in what also featured a matchup between a pair of Liberty teammates when USK Praha faced Dynamo Kursk in EuroLeague group action last week. Amanda Zahui B scored 21 points to lead her USK Praha squad, but Epiphanny Prince and Dynamo Kursk pulled out the 109-88 victory to remain unbeaten in EuroLeague competition. With the loss, USK Praha fell to 2-2. After a bye week, USK Praha returns to action on Nov. 18 for a Czech League game against Sokol HK.

What a week for Epiphanny Prince as she guided Dynamo Kursk to a pair of victories last week, shooting an impressive percentage while scoring efficiently. In the 109-88 win over Amanda Zahui B and USK Praha in EuroLeague, Piph dropped 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting while drilling 3 3-pointers. That allowed Kursk to improve to 4-0 as the only unbeaten team in EuroLeague Group A. In the Russia League win over Enisey, she finished with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting with 2 more triples. Overall, she averaged 17.5 ppg, shot 14-of-17 from the field, and 5-of-6 from long distance. Prince and Dynamo Kursk enter a bye week, and return to action on Nov. 19 against Sparta&K MR in the Russian League.

In their final game before the 1st break of the season, Lindsay Allen and Dynamo Moscow were edged by Sparta&K MR in the Russian League 73-68. Allen scored 11 points with 4 rebounds and an assist for Dynamo, and is now averaging 12.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game in Russian League action. Dynamo Moscow returns to action against MBA on Nov. 17.

It one of the most exciting games of the EuroCup season so far, Bria Hartley and Mersin found themselves just on the wrong side of a double-overtime thriller at Good Angels, 87-89, representing their 1st loss in EuroCup group action this season. Hartley led her team in scoring with 21 points, connecting on 5 3-pointers with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. With the setback, Mersin fell to 3-1 in EuroCup group action with two games to play in the stage. Over the weekend, Hartley played just 15 minutes in a lopsided 93-49 win over Bornova, still scoring 13 points with 3 assists. Mersin enters a bye week and returns to action against Istanbul Univ. on Nov. 18.

Fenerbahce picked up a huge early season EuroLeague victory, edging another perennial league power UMMC 73-71 last week. With the win, they improved to 3-1 in Group B, moving into a 4-way tie for the top spot in the table. Vaughn scored 8 points with 4 rebounds in the victory over UMMC, in a potential preview of a late-season playoff matchup. In the Turkish League, Fenerbahce eased past Besiktas 82-65, with Vaughn contributing 6 points and 3 rebounds. After a week off, Fenerbahce returns to action against Yakin Dogu on Nov. 18.

Dominating on the boards like only she can, Kiah Stokes hauled in 20 rebounds to go along with 10 points as she led Botas to a 62-56 win over Canik over the weekend, helping her team improve to 3-2 in the Turkish League, good for a tie for 4th place in the standings. Stokes is averaging 16.8 ppg and 16.4 rpg, ranking 2nd in the league in rebounding and 9th in scoring. Botas returns to action against Abdullah Gul on Nov. 18.
