Big Week for Liberty Players Across the Globe – International Update 10/31

Another busy week for the Liberty stars internationally, and one that brought a great deal of success as New York’s nine international stars combined to post a 12-2 overall record between international tournament competition and domestic league action.

This of course came with some monster performances, particularly in Turkey where Bria Hartley and Kiah Stokes are posting huge numbers. Stokes scored 21 points with 18 rebounds as Botas edged Cukurova in Turkey, while Hartley had 25 points for Mersin in their Turkish League victory last week.

In EuroLeague action, Epiphanny Prince, Kia Vaughn, and Amanda Zahui B all saw their teams pick up victories. Zahui B had a double-double for USK Praha in a win over CCC Polkowice, scoring 13 points with 11 rebounds.

In EuroCup group play, which reached the midway point, Hartley and Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe both came out victorious. Raincock-Ekunwe, who leads her team in scoring in France and EuroCup action, had 16 points and 10 rebounds in Nantes’ win over Lattes Mont.

This matchup of the week coming up will be in EuroLeague, where Epiphanny Prince and Amanda Zahui B will go head-to-head, on Wednesday.

LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bria Hartley – Mersin
Bria Hartley dominated for Mersin in a pair of big wins last week, including wrapping up the 1st half of EuroCup group play with a 3-0 record. In the two victories, Hartley averaged 22.0 ppg and 4.0 apg, dropping 25 points in a 76-63 win over Adana ASKI in the Turkish League, while she connected twice from deep to post 19 points in a 69-62 win over Enisey in EuroCup play.

Rebecca Allen scored 4 points with a couple of blocked shots, but it was not enough to lead Lyon passed 2nd place Flammes, who picked up a 74-59 victory last week. Allen also had 3 rebounds and an assist in 23 minutes of action. She is averaging 1.4 blocks per game, which ranks 4th in the French League. Allen will face Roche later this week before a 2-week break between games.

Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe continues to shine for Nantes, as she helped her team posted a 2-0 record last week, including a key win in EuroCup to keep its hopes of advancing out of group play alive. She scored 14 points with 13 rebounds as her team edged French League rival Hainaut to get its 1st EuroCup victory. Later this week, they will face group leader Belfius Namur, who went 3-0 through the 1st half of the group stage. Earlier in the week, Raincock-Ekunwe posted 16 points and 10 boards in a 67-60 win over Lattes Mont. She is averaging a double-double in both leagues, and ranks 7th in EuroCup in scoring (19.0 ppg) and 8th in rebounding (11.3 rpg), and 1st in France with 13.4 rpg, the only player in the league to average double figures on the glass.

Amanda Zahui B continues to dominate in EuroLeague and Czech League action for USK Praha, leading her squad to a pair of wins last week, including a critical 72-66 victory over CCC Polkowice (Temi Fagbenle, Alysha Clark, Bria Holmes) in EuroLeague play. She had 13 points and 11 rebounds in that victory, as she averages a double-double of 18.0 ppg and 10.0 rpg in EuroLeague, ranking 3rd in the league in both categories. Praha routed Slovanka in Czech action 127-36, with Zahui B posting 13 points and 6 blocked shots in just 23 minutes. On Wednesday, she will face Liberty teammate Epiphanny Prince and Dynamo Kursk in a big early season EuroLeague contest.

Dynamo Kursk is still unbeaten this season after picking up wins in EuroLeague and Russian League play last week. Epiphanny Prince had 3 points and 2 rebounds, logging just 9 minutes, in an 88-74 win over Sopron Basket in EuroLeague group action, as Kursk improved to 3-0 on the young season. She also scored 3 points with 2 assists in a 74-60 win over Nadezhda Orenburg. This week, Prince faces Liberty teammate Amanda Zahui B and USK Praha in an exciting EuroLeague matchup.

Dynamo Moscow went 1-1 last week and now sits at 2-3 in the Russian League, currently in a 3-way tie for 5th place in the league. In a 75-73 win over Inventa, Lindsay Allen scored 12 points with 3 rebounds and 3 steals, and followed that up with another 12 point performance in a 77-65 setback to Enisey. Allen is averaging 12.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg, and 5.0 apg so far for Dynamo Moscow. She will face Sparta &K on Nov. 5, before facing a 12-day break between game action.

Finding a groove as of late, Bria Hartley and Mersin won both games last week, completing the 1st half of EuroCup group action with a 3-0 record, while evening its Turkish League record to 2-2. In a 69-62 win over Enisey, she scored 19 points with a pair of 3-pointers and 5 assists. Four days later, Mersin easily got past Adana ASKI 76-63, as Hartley scored 25 points. Offensively, Hartley is amongst the league leaders in both EuroCup and Turkey, where she ranks 2nd (21.3 ppg) and 6th (18.3 ppg) in scoring respectively. It will be two games this week for Mersin, facing Good Angels in EuroCup and Bornova in Turkey.

Kia Vaughn and Fenerbahce bounced back in EuroLeague action, picking up a convincing 79-63 win over Lattes Montp. to improve to 2-1 in group play with a key matchup with UMMC looming this week. Vaughn scored 8 points with 4 rebounds in the win, logging just 26 minutes. Fenerbahce also remained amongst the unbeaten in the Turkish League thanks to an 83-78 win over Istanbul University. Vaughn scored 13 points on an efficient 6-of-10 shooting with 3 rebounds and 3 assists. She is averaging 14.5 ppg in Turkey and shooting .694 from the field. This week, Fenerbahce faces UMMC on Nov. 1, and Besiktas over the weekend.

Thanks to a pair of monster performances from Kiah Stokes, who is emerging as one of the top players in the Turkish League, receiving Week 3 MVP honors for her efforts, Botas won its last two games and events to improve to 2-2. Last week in a 71-70 win over Cukurova, Stokes went 7-of-9 from the field to score 21 points to go along with 18 rebounds. She is now averaging 18.5 ppg and 15.5 rpg in Turkey, ranking 4th in the league in scoring and 2nd in rebounding. This week, Adana will face Canik Beledi. before a 2-week break between games.
