Back in Action – International Update 1-9

Although the Liberty stars competing in Turkey went straight through the Holiday Break, now reaching the midpoint of their domestic season, for most other Liberty players abroad it was a return to action this week after a brief hiatus.

EuroLeague action resumed with Epiphanny Prince, Kia Vaughn, and Amanda Zahui B each leading their team to victory. This week, Prince and Zahui B will meet for the 2nd time. In the EuroCup playoffs, Bria Hartley and Mersin got off to a strong start in their Round of 16 series with TTT Riga, winning at home 88-70. Game 2 is on Thursday with a chance to advance to the quarterfinals on the line.

Shavonte Zellous (Besiktas) and Kiah Stokes (Botas) met in the Turkish League, with Zellous dropping 21 points to lead her team to a win.

LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kia Vaughn – Fenerbahce
Kia Vaughn had a huge game for Fenerbahce in helping them hold off Lattes Montp. in EuroLeague action 76-75. She finished with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting with 5 rebounds. Fenerbahce improved to 8-2 in Group B, maintaining a tie for 1st place in the standings, while Vaughn is averaging 9.7 ppg and 6.2 rpg in EuroLeague action.

In her first action of 2017 Rebecca Allen came up big for Lyon, helping lead her squad to a 66-59 win over Villeneuve, improving to 6-5 on the season to maintain a tie for 5th place in the league standings. Allen scored 19 points with 6 steals in 33 minutes of action. She is averaging 9.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg, and 1.5 spg in France. Allen and Lyon will be back in action on Jan. 20, when they face Tarbes.

Despite a double-double of 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds from Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe, Nantes dropped its first game of 2017 89-76 to Hainaut. Raincock-Ekunwe continues to average a double-double for the season with 15.5 ppg and 12.4 rpg, now ranking 4th in France in scoring while still leading the league in rebounding as the only player averaging double-figures on the glass. Nantes returns to action when it faces Nice on Jan. 19.

Coming off the holiday break, Amanda Zahui B and USK Praha picked up a needed EuroLeague victory, topping CCC Polkowice 61-51 to improve to 6-4 in Group A and remain in a tie for 2nd place in the table. Zahui B scored 14 points in the win with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. She is averaging 17.8 ppg in EuroLeague action with 9.3 rpg. USK Praha also beat U19 Chance 108-33 over the weekend, but Zahui B rested and did not play in the game. The next game for Zahui B will come this week as her team faces Epiphanny Prince and undefeated Dynamo Kursk in EuroLeague action.

Epiphanny Prince had a chance to ease back into action after the Holiday break as Dynamo Kursk picked up a pair of lopsided wins last week. In an 86-66 win over Sopron Basket in EuroLeague, Prince scored 11 points and knocked down 3 3-pointers, while she rested as Kursk moved to 10-0 in the Russian League, beating Spartak N. 100-40. Coming up this week, Prince and Dynamo Kursk will face her Liberty teammate Amanda Zahui B and USK Praha in EuroLeague and Kazanochka in Russia.

Bria Hartley and Mersin picked up two key victories last week, most importantly taking a big step towards advancing in the EuroCup playoffs thanks to an 88-70 win over TTT Riga in the 1st leg of their Round of 16 matchup last week. Hartley scored 10 points in that win, also grabbing 6 boards with 4 assists. Game 2 will be on Jan. 11, with Mersin potentially advancing to the quarterfinals. In Turkish League play, another win improved their league record to 6-5, up to a tie for 5th place in the standings, as Mersin topped Abdullah Gul 74-68. Hartley contributed 14 points and 4 rebounds in the victory. In addition to the EuroCup game this week, Mersin will face Galatasaray in Turkey next weekend.

It was a big start to 2017 for Fenerbahce as Kia Vaughn’s squad posted a pair of wins, moving into a tie for 1st in Group B of the EuroLeague and maintained its tie with Yakin Dogu on top of the Turkish League table at the league’s midway point. Vaughn had a great game in a 76-75 win over Lattes Montp. in EuroLeague, scoring 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting with 5 rebounds, and in the Turkish League Fenerbahce easily defeated Adana ASKI 77-64. Coming up if a crucial showdown with UMMC in EuroLeague on Wednesday.

Kiah Stokes and Botas had their winning streak snapped with a one-possession 68-66 loss to her former team Besiktas over the weekend, who was led by Liberty teammate Shavonte Zellous. Stokes had 6 points and 11 rebounds in the loss, as Botas is now 8-5 in Turkey and sitting along in 4th place in the standings. Stokes is averaging 14.2 ppg and 14.5 rpg, ranking 2nd in the league in rebounding and 1st with 2.5 bpg. Botas returns to action against 1st place Yakin Dogu this weekend.

Shavonte Zellous and Besiktas bounced back from a disappointing 3-point loss to Hatay just before New Year’s to beat Kiah Stokes and Botas 68-66 over the weekend. Zellous paced Besiktas in the win, scoring 21 points with 7 rebounds. She is averaging 17.3 ppg as her team improved to 7-6 overall, good for a tie for 5th place in the league standings at the midway point of the regular season. Zellous and Besiktas return to action to face Cukurova this weekend.
