Tina Charles Named Player of the Month

NEW YORK, NY  August 5, 2014  New York Liberty center Tina Charles was named the WNBAs Eastern Conference Player of the Month for July, the league announced today. For Charles, it was her first Player of the Month award of the season and fourth of her career.

Charles was a force to be reckoned with all month long for the Liberty, guiding New York to a 6-4 record in July thanks to her Eastern Conference-leading 21.1 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. Charles also paced the East in minutes per game (35.4), finished second in double-doubles (seven), fifth in blocks (1.2), and ninth in both field goal (48.1) and free throw (82.5) percentages.

Highlights of Charles month included recording a new career-high of 32 points in the Libertys 87-80 victory against the defending WNBA Champion Minnesota Lynx at Madison Square Garden. She also had a 31-point, 15-rebound effort against the Los Angeles Sparks.

For the season, Charles is second in the WNBA in rebounding (10.0 rpg) and double-doubles (14), and ranks fifth in scoring (18.4 ppg).

The Liberty will close out a three-game road trip on Tuesday, August 5, taking on the Washington Mystics at 7 p.m. New York, winners in eight of its last 12 games, looks to secure a playoff spot with seven regular season games remaining.
