New York and Chicago last matched up on May 17th for the Libertys season home opener. Chicago triumphed at The Garden, 79-65. The series is 1-0 in favor of the Sky.

The Eastern Conference standings race is tight. The Liberty are just 4.5 games behind first place and it is still early in the season. The last two Liberty losses have been by single digits. Both teams are looking to snap losing streaks; the Liberty have dropped three in a row and the Sky have lost four consecutively.

Liberty head coach Bill Laimbeer pointed to attention to detail and intensity as non-negotiable keys to the Libertys success. We know we are not the most talented basketball team, and we also know that we if don't have all our players playing well we are going to struggle. We also know that if we get everyone playing well we are going to be very competitive so it's a fine line and right now we are on the bottom half of the line, he said.

  • The Liberty fell to the Sun in Connecticut, 76-72, on Sunday.
  • Cappie Pondexter led New York with 21 points and 5 assists on efficient 6-for-9 shooting from the field.
  • Tina Charles added 15 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds.
  • Avery Warley-Talbert received the starting nod in place of Plenette Pierson who did not play due to knee injury. Warley-Talbert finished with an impressive 11 points and 7 rebounds on 5-6 shooting from the field.
  • The Sky fell to the Washington Mystics, 79-68, on Friday.
  • Epiphanny Prince continues to shine in her return to the court scoring 17 points, grabbing 6 rebounds and dishing out 4 assists.
  • Allie Quigley contributed off the bench with 18 points of her own.
  • Courtney Vandersloot struggled from the field only managing 5 points on 1-7 shooting.

The Sky are reeling without the contributions of star players. Elena Delle Donne, the leagues second leading scorer, missed her second straight game while battling Lyme disease. Jessica Breland, who accounts for nearly 12 points and 9 rebounds a game, missed the last game with a right shin injury. The Sky have been without star center Sylvia Fowles all season due to a hip injury. The Sky have lost four games in a row and have a weakened roster, which gives the Liberty have an opportunity to steal a much-needed game on the road.

Allstate Arena is going to be loud. Chicago is hosting Camp Day during Wednesdays matinee game which means the arena will be filled with screaming excited kids and clapping thunder-sticks. The noise may provide an x-factor in favor of Chicago.
