January 8, 2007 - New York, NY - New York Liberty Senior Vice President and General Manager Carol Blazejowski announced today that the team selected 2005 WNBA #1 overall draft pick, Janel McCarville, with the 3rd pick in the 2007 WNBA Dispersal Draft.
A native of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, McCarville a 62 forward/center, established herself as a top player at the University of Minnesota. In 2004-05, her senior season, McCarville averaged 16 ppg while shooting .502 from the floor, along with 10.6 rpg in 30.8 mpg. McCarville was named a first team Kodak and USBWA All American as well as a finalist for the Wooden Award, Wade Trophy and Naismith Award as the nations top collegiate female basketball player.
Currently in Slovakia playing for K Cero Vods Kosice, McCarville is posting a robust stats line: 14.2 ppg, 11.3 rpg, 4.3 apg and 3.7 spg in 34 mpg. Her team is currently undefeated at 14-0.
As a member of the Charlotte Sting, McCarville played through several injuries her first two seasons. In 2006, McCarville averaged 14 mpg posting 4.5 ppg on .456 shooting and 3.5 rpg.

Janel has demonstrated the ability to score in the low post and rebound and will provide us with another option up front. She is having a breakout year overseas and we look forward to adding her ability, youth and confidence to the team this summer.
New York plays its first regular season home game on Sunday, May 20th at 4:00 p.m., as point guard Loree Moore leads the Liberty up against Candice Dupree and the Chicago Sky.
